Parishioners and students from Negros Oriental and Leyte recently participated in disaster preparedness trainings conducted in partnership with Smart Communications.
Close to 100 members of the clergy and lay people from the Diocese of Dumaguete attended Smart’s #SafePH training held in Ayungon, Negros Oriental.
The activity is part of Smart’s ongoing #SafePH series of disaster preparedness trainings to help build the capacity of communities during calamities.
The training was facilitated by Dr. Cedric Daep, head of the Albay Public Safety and Emergency Management Office (Apsemo), and Louie Domingo of Emergency Management Center.
Daep shared information on weather disturbances and the possible effects of earthquake and other hazards. There is still no proven scientific way to predict earthquakes, so it is important to make preparedness a way of life, according to Daep.
He also taught the participants how to develop project proposals for disaster mitigation in their own communities.
Domingo, meanwhile, taught the participants what to do before, during, and after a calamity and shared practical survival tips, from how to apply first aid and what to put in their emergency kits or “e-balde,” to how to protect themselves in times of danger.
The training was set just after a 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit Luzon and the Visayas in April.
In March, about 800 students of Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) in Tacloban City also participated in a 2-day TNT Tropang Ready activity initiated by Smart. Resource speakers from the academe and local authorities shared with the students information about hazards and safety tips.
TNT Tropang Ready is a program that tours schools nationwide to help enhance the preparedness of the youth and develop them into preparedness ambassadors in their own communities. The program includes a series of talks, workshops, and teaching sessions integrated in their educational curriculum.
Smart promotes the culture of preparedness in communities with the help of technology as part of its #SafePH advocacy. It has initiated mobile solutions such as the Emergency Cell Broadcast System (ECBS) with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), and community caravans for the youth, families, and members of the Church, in the company’s efforts toward resilience.

Independent internet speed-testing firm Ookla announced that PLDT, Inc. and its wireless subsidiary Smart Communications, Inc. kept the top spot as the fastest fixed and mobile network in the country.
According to Ookla, the global leader in internet testing and analysis, in their third to fourth quarter 2018 ranking of fixed-line internet service providers, PLDT came out on top with download speeds of up to 52.28 megabits per second (Mbps) and upload speeds of up to 55.95 Mbps.
Other fixed line providers also recorded higher speed scores compared to the first two quarters of last year. Just behind PLDT was Sky with a speed score of 11.23 from 10.89, followed by SmartBro with 10.99 from 9.79, and Globe Telecom, Inc. with 9.36 from 6.58.
Ookla also runs Speedtest, a service that allows users to test the speed of their internet connection.
In terms of mobile internet, Smart toppled its known rival Globe with an average download speed of 13.85 Mbps and upload speed of 6.35 Mbps while Globe, on the other hand, had an average download speed of 11.36 Mbps and upload speed of 4.94 Mbps.
PLDT and Smart also had the lowest latency or lag according to the report by the said internet speed surveyor.
Mario Tamayo, PLDT and Smart senior vice president for network planning and engineering proudly said, “This award is proof that our continued investments in our network to improve the mobile internet experience of our customers across the country are paying off.”
“This recognition is testament to (PLDT’s and Smart’s) exceptional performance in Q3-Q4 based on Ookla’s rigorous analysis of consumer-initiated tests taken with Speedtest,” said Ookla executive vice-president Jamie Steven, which was quoted in a statement by PLDT over the weekend.
PLDT is said to be spending an estimated $5 billion from 2016 to 2020 to enhance and expand its fixed and wireless networks. In 2018, its capital expenditure reached P58 billion and this year, the company is allocating at P70 billion for capital expenditure.

The 11th staging of Gabay Guro’s Teachers’ Fest was held at Mall of Asia Arena on Sunday, September 23. The Smart-PLDT advocacy project was attended by well-known artists such as Sharon Cuneta, Gabby Concepcion, Edu Manzano, Pops Fernandez, Regine Velasquez, Jed Madela, Christian Bautista, and many more.
Among the big names were MayMay Entrata and Edward Barber.
It was said that one of the most heartwarming moments during the event was when MayMay saw her former teacher among the more than 17,000 teachers that were at the Arena.
She and Edward were onstage when she asked if there are any delegates from Cagayan de Oro. Someone shouted from the patron side and it turned out to be one of the star’s former teachers.
MayMay wanted to go near her teacher but the production decided to invite her backstage to reunite with her former student.
Gabay Guro’s 11th Grand Gathering.
The annual event was organized as a tribute to Filipino teachers.
Aside from the star-studded program, the event also raffled off a handful of prizes including gift certificates, smartphones and gadgets, home appliances, livelihood packages, vehicles, and a brand new house and lot.
“Gabay Guro’s annual Grand Gathering is our big ‘Thank You’ to all our beloved teachers who dedicate their life to the invaluable role of educating our children,” said Gabay Guro Chairperson Chaye Cabal-Revilla. “They are our partners in nation-building through education, and we look forward to continuing our mission to support and uplift them as we mark our 11th year.”

United Kingdom-based wireless coverage mapping company OpenSignal said that telecommunications company Smart outperformed rival Globe when it came to overall download speed.
The site released the week’s Mobile Network Update for August 2018. They collected 949,285,077 measurements from 76,034 test devices from May 1 to July 29 this year.
“Analyzing 949 million measurements collected in the 90 days from May 1, 2018, we compared the 3G and 4G results of the Philippines’ two mobile operators, Globe Telecom and PLDT’s Smart Communications.”
Smart defeated Globe in terms of 4G average download speeds with 13.02 megabits per second and the latter having 7.34 megabits per second. Smart also has 5.53 megabits per second on 4G average upload speeds, which is higher than Globe’s 2.96 megabits per second.
“As was the case six months ago, Globe and Smart split our 4G availability and 4G download speed awards. While Smart’s lead in LTE download speed is still quite large in our measurements, Globe’s lead in 4G availability has shrunk considerably. In our latest test period, Smart closed the gap in 4G availability to less than 4 percentage points. Smart’s growth in 4G reach has been quite phenomenal lately. 18 months ago, Smart’s 4G availability score languished below 40%.”
On the other hand, Globe claimed the top spot when it came to 3G download speed with 2.7 megabits per second while Smart has 2.34 megabits per second.
When it came to 4G latency, Smart and Globe are at a draw — Globe with 55.15 milliseconds, while Smart with 53.48 milliseconds. OpenSignal defined latency as “the delay data experiences as it makes a round trip through the network.”
“In our 4G latency metric, we saw a rebalancing of the scales. Latency measures a network’s response time, with lower scores being better. Smart’s 4G latency results suffered over the last six months, increasing by more than 5 milliseconds, while Globe’s improved by roughly the same amount. We now have a tie between the two operators in this metric whereas six months ago Smart was clearly in the lead. We also recorded dramatic improvements in 3G latency on both operators’ networks, though Smart held onto the award in this category.”
Reigning Miss Teen International Carly Peeters goes back to the Philippines to join Smart and Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation‘s ‘School-in-a-bag’ campaign. The Fil-Am beauty queen encourages people and various organizations to sponsor the said campaign in hopes of improving the educational resources in underserved areas in the country.
The School-in-a-bag is a package containing a laptop, five tablets, TV, a solar panel with batteries, and educational content that is donated to remote communities, especially those without electricity.
Peeters takes on a vital role as the ambassador of YBOH. Her willingness to fight for a better education system in the world made her the perfect face of this campaign.
“I call on organizations, most especially Filipino-American communities around the world, and even individuals, to engage and be part of this initiative by sponsoring more School-in-a-bag kits. The future of the Philippines relies on the education of today’s children. We all have a stake in this, so let us work together,” Peeters said.
Meanwhile, YBOH has recently signed a memorandum of agreement with Smart Communications, the head of the campaign, to bring the learning package to more areas. Since the launch in 2016, Smart and its partner donors have delivered 38 School-in-a-bag units to 65 learning communities all over the country. Each bag, inclusive of training for the teachers, costs Php100,000.
Under this partnership, Smart will initially donate one bag to an Alternative Learning System (ALS) center supported by the foundation in Caramoan Island, Camarines Sur. The ALS is a learning option for those without access to formal education in schools. Teachers have also noted that the DLP helps them teach different grade levels at the same time via parallel classes. This can also prove helpful to ALS teachers who handle students at different skill levels.
How often do you experience losing your load because it has already expired? We’re tired of that, just like you!
The good thing about Smart, Prepaid Load Validity is extended to one year! Yes, you read that right. In compliance with the new memorandum issued by NTC, DICT, and DTI, Smart is glad to deliver you the great news! The Smart Communications, Inc. also announced that the new load validity scheme will include Talk N Text and Sun Cellular subscribers.
In lieu of this, Smart has extended their appreciation about the new regulation in a statement.
“Smart, TNT and Sun shall comply with the Memorandum Circular (MC) No. 05-12-2017 issued jointly by the NTC, DICT, and DTI, extending the validity of prepaid load to one year.
In particular, Smart, TNT and Sun prepaid loads worth P300 and above shall moving forward have a one-year validity, regardless of the validity period printed on the physical cards already out in the market.
We are grateful to the three agencies for the grant of a six-month extension period before the full implementation of the MC. This provides us more time to implement the extensive reconfiguration of our IT and other support systems, and to conduct the needed tests, in order to ensure trouble-free implementation of the new expiry period.”
