Otso Diretso is an electoral alliance of political parties in the 2019 Philippine general elections that were opposing President Rodrigo Duterte’s ideologies.
It is a slate of eight candidates (otso translates as eight) for the Philippine Senate.
They were considered underdogs coming in to the elections. While Otso Diretso had thousands of volunteers, it did not have the support of the ruling party, which was probably why they did not win. No more than 5 mayors endorsed Otso Diretso in the midterm polls.
UP Islamic Studies professor Julkipli Wadi said,”If you minus Duterte from the equation, may laban talaga ang Otso Diretso dahil mga baguhan din yung nasa administration.” He also stated that even with former President Aquino’s and Robredo’s support, Otso Diretso would still get nowhere.
The rest of the Otso Diretso slate were outside the top 20: human rights lawyer Chel Diokno, Magdalo partylist Rep. Gary Alejano, peace advocate Samira Gutoc, veteran election lawyer Romulo Macalintal, human rights lawyer and former Deputy Speaker Erin Tanada, and former Solicitor General Florin Hilbay.
Gutoc posted a 35 second clip thanking her fans and the support she got from them
“I’m alright despite what happened. Ganun naman talaga e. It’s like my 3 bar exams. To everyone who helped me, who voted for me thank you talaga. Saludo po sa Pilipinas!”
Pilo Hilbay, who finished at 29th tweeted.” Mga kababayan, one of the great privileges of my life was having to campaign for you & w/ you. Maraming kwento ng kampanya: stories of hope, inspiration, commitment, grit, generosity, & grace, bound together by love of country. These, we must remember. Salamat sa inyong lahat!
At the 21st is Diokno, who also tweeted about the loss.

Our campaign’s color is mint green. My kids actually picked this. It represents something fresh and something new, which, I think, is exactly what we need in the Senate now. It’s bright, happy, hopeful—and that is exactly the kind of future that justice will bring to our country. #25ChelDiokno
“Muli, sa lahat ng kapwa ko Pilipino, salamat sa inyo.”
Atty. Romulo Macalintal said thank you for the support as he ends his political career.
“It is clear that a great majority of our voters have chosen other candidates. And I respect their decision as I concede defeat in this senatorial race. Sa ating mga senior citizens at mga persons with disability, salamat sa tiwalang ipinagkaloob ninyo sa akin.”
Erin Tañada also conceded, and said, “Oo nga, we would concede the elections but never our principles, tuloy ang laban.”
Administration candidates dominated the polls and surveys done by Pulse Asia, that alone already said a lot about the outcome. The only one who made it was Bam Aquino, and he had a hard time winning a seat.
Vice President Leni Robredo was not ready to give up though, as she showed optimism throughout all this.
““May laban pa tayong hinaharap. Hindi pa tapos ang bilangan, at kailangan pang bantayan.”
Kiko Pangilinan is also waiting until everything has been counted and is relying on the 3 million left.
They did not expect to make it this far. According to their spokeperson, the party expected only Aquino and Roxas to make it. They themselves were not even confident with the other candidates.
The way things are going, it looks like Roxas is not going to make it, as he needs 4.5 million to win. While Aquino needs over 300,000.
Otso Diretso blamed their subpar performance on the fact that they lacked resources and political machinery, which the administration has access to.
The administration party already played early by posting posters and signs, even before the official race started.
Even with all that, the Senate will remain independent, and do not expect that they will side with the President in all issues.

Vice President Leni Robredo was in the middle of a controversy regarding the skirt she wore while leading the Rizal Day rites in Luneta Park on December 30.
Facebook page Luminous by Trixie Cruz-Angeles & Ahmed Paglinawan first posted the photos, accusing Robredo of wearing an Ifugao death blanket and suggesting that she should read about cultural appropriation.
Wait. I hope that is not an Ifugao death blanket the Vice President is wearing. Or Isinai. In the second picture below…
Ifugao expert and University of Hawaii graduate Stephen Acabado clarified that the Vice President is not wearing a mistaken-to-be a death blanket, but an Ifugao ikat.
Ikat is a dyeing technique used to pattern textiles prior to weaving the fabric.
He added that this just shows how many Filipinos are ignorant about the Philippines’ history.
My VP is wearing an Ifugao ikat! The lizard motif is a dominant design in Southeast Asian textiles/images.It is not a…
Page Ifugao Nation also clarified that the fabric is not funerary and that many Ifugao weavers are actually recipients of Robredo’s Angat-Buhay programs and she also helps in the promotion of their products.

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said that former Davao City vice mayor Paolo Duterte‘s list of figures, students, and companies allegedly plotting against his father, President Rodrigo Duterte, is false.
During an interview at the turnover of the Balangiga bells to the Philippines, Lorenzana told the media that he knew that it was fake news the first time he saw the post.
The list that he was referring to was Paolo’s facebook post accusing politicians, media personalities, religious figures, students, and private companies including PLDT and Jollibee, of plotting to oust his father.
“I still maintain [my position] that it is fake news,” Lorenzana added.
Vice President Leni Robredo, on the other hand, viewed the list as a joke.
“Baka nagbibiro lang naman iyon. Parang hindi naman seryoso. Baka joke. Kasi balita ko inalis rin naman siya.
“Napaka-irresponsible. Walang namang basehan. Pangalawa, hindi ko alam kung alam niya kung saan iyon nanggaling, kasi obviously, iyong gumawa noon, hindi man lang nag-aksaya ng panahon para mag-research. Sana nalaman niya na hindi naman ako pumupunta sa mga lugar na iyon, at iyong mga nakalista hindi ko naman kilala.”
In a deleted Facebook post, Presidential son Paolo Duterte shared a list of the personalities and companies that are allegedly planning to oust his father, President Rodrigo Duterte.
The list included politicians like Vice President Leni Robredo, former Vice President Jejomar Binay, Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio, former Chief Justice Hilario Davide, Associate Justice Marvic Leonen, Leila de Lima, Senator Risa Hontiveros, and former senator Francisto Tadtad. Others are known to be allies of former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.
Aside from the politicians, a few religious personalities are also listed like Bishop Broderick Pabilo, Bishop Leo Drona, Bishop Antonio Tobias, Bishop Deogracias Iñiguez, Bishop Julio Xavier Labayen, Bishop Pablo David, and Bishop Arturo Santos.
Even private companies are not exempted because Jollibee Food Corp., Dole Philippines, PLDT, Philsaga Mining Corp., General Tuna Corp., and Sumi Philipines Wiring System are allegedly against the President.
Journalists Maria Ressa, Ellen Tordesillas, and Ed Lingao are also in the list.
Paolo added that the mentioned individuals hold meetings at Maryhill School of Theology in New Manila, Alfredo’s and Annabelle’s Restaurants at Tomas Morato Avenue, and UP Hotels in Quezon City.

Actress Agot Isidro reacted to a tweet containing a video of Public Attorney’s Office chief Persida Acosta singing You by Basil Valdez.
Agot poked fun from the video by saying, “Diyos na Mahabagin, bakit poooo???”
Acosta was seen having fun at a gathering and was singing via a karaoke. She even fought her way through the high parts of the song and earned the applause of the people around her as soon as she was done with her singing.
A Netizen said that he thought he’s tone-deaf, but Acosta proved him otherwise.
Salamat Persi.

Another said that he needed something to stop himself from eye-rolling every time he gets to see the lawyer, like an “Acosta vaccine”.
I need an Acosta vaccine! Yung tipong di mag- roroll yung mata mo pag nakita sya

Agot is a known critic of the President Rodrigo Duterte administration. She has previously expressed that she is skeptical of President Duterte’s role in the government as she finds Vice President Leni Robredo more effective.
“The Vice-President acts more presidential than the President. President be talaga yan?” she said in a tweet in May 2018.
She has also urged for the jailing of Imelda Marcos, posting phrases like, “I-selda si Imelda!”

Late Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago’s younger sister Paula Defensor Knack slammed Vice President Leni Robredo, accusing her and her late husband Jesse Robredo of betraying her ate.
She said that she would even gladly go on a debate against Leni if only President Rodrigo Duterte would allow it. In case it happens, she also wants it to be shown on national television.
Knack said that she’s not afraid of facing the VP because she was trained by her siblings and as she has judged in the world’s most prestigious debates in international criminal law and public international law at the Hague, wherein she’s currently based.
“I SHALL NEVER FORGET what they did. I saw my sister very disappointed.”
The story goes back to 1991, when Jesse was still a fairly new mayor of Naga City. Knack said that he agreed to join her and her sister in the Movers and People’s Reform. And as the head of the organization, he and his wife asked for his name to be put in the party’s list of officers.
But weeks later, Jesse quit and joined Fidel Ramos.
Knack said that she just wants Leni to explain why she and her late husband betrayed Santiago, and why she didn’t convince her husband to stay.
“Why didn’t you convince your husband to stay with Sen. Miriam and help reform the country since he already gave his word?
“Define reform. Define betray. Dafine LOVE for the country.”
Paula Defensor Knack is a supporter of the Duterte administration.
Former Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Assistant Secretary Mocha Uson lashed out on Vice President Leni Robredo for telling her to own up to her scandals and alleged lies even after resigning from her place in the government.
Uson stated that she’s not the one full of lies and scandals, but Robredo herself.
“Kung sa kasinungalingan lang, naku, sino kaya ang totoong sinungaling? Maski nga ‘yung posisyon niyo bilang [vice president] ay isang malaking kasinungalingan.”
She also mentioned the Vice President’s video that was presented at the 60th United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs annual meeting last year.
“Ang fake news ay ikaw, Vice President ng Pilipinas, gagawa ka ng video, ipapadala mo sa international community. Sa United Nations na about drugs at sasabihin mo na libo libo na ang pinapatay sa Pilipinas dahil sa EJKs… ‘Yun ‘yung kasinungalingan. Nung lumabas po yung video na yan sa international community yung OFWs po natin na-discriminate at na-threaten.”
The former assistant secretary then challenged Robredo to face her.
“Patas na ang laban ngayon, wala akong tinatago, wala akong kinakatakutan, magharapan tayo, mata sa mata, eyeliner to eyeliner, mahilig din siya mag-eyeliner.”
According to the September 2018 Pulse Asia Survey released on September 25, majority of Filipinos trust Senate President Vicente ‘Tito’ Sotto III and approve of his performance.
Sotto obtained the second highest approval and trust ratings, only falling behind President Rodrigo Duterte himself.
The survey showed 73% of respondents approve of Sotto’s performance, while 6% do not. 21% are still undecided. In June 2018, former Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III got a 72% approval rating.
He also got the trust of the majority of respondents. 66% of the respondents say that they have “big trust” in him, 27% are undecided, and 6% have “small or no trust.”
Sotto got the lowest distrust rating among the top 5 national officials, including President Duterte, Vice President Leni Robredo, House Speaker Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, and Acting Supreme Court Chief Justice Antonio Carpio. Adding to that, he also received the majority’s approval and trust rating scores across all geographic areas and socio economic groups.
The Pulse Asia survey was conducted from September 1 to 7. It included face-to-face interviews and a multistage probability sample of 1,800 registered voters.
It was done during the President’s official visit to Israel and Jordan. It also coincided with the issuance of Proclamation 572 ordering the revocation of opposition Senator Antonio Trillanes IV’s amnesty, the issue regarding rice shortage, the 6.4% inflation rate, and the Senate blue ribbon committee hearings regarding the Tulfo siblings’ advertisement controversy.
Aika Robedo, Vice President Leni Robredo‘s eldest daughter, chided the reasons behind President Duterte’s move to rescind the amnesty granted to Senator Antonio Trillanes IV by former President Noynoy Aquino.
In her tweet, Aika re-posted a message that she claims to have seen on Facebook. It seems to be questioning if the government would consider a dead person alive if his death certificate has gone missing.
“Seen in my Facebook feed this morning: “Kapag nawala ba ‘yung death certificate sa Civil Registrar, ibig ba sabihin buhay ka pa?” Mismo. Magandang umaga.”
The tweet earned thousands of responses on Twitter. Most of them, criticisms from supporters of the President.
@MarkAnthonyDCL1 tweeted Aika a sarcastic response.
Nawala?
Another netizen called her “shallow” and “stupid”.
#FakeVP
@MontyFerandez3 claimed that their votes went missing and asked Aika if that means that they voted for her mother.
Boto nga namin nawala so it means Nanay mo binoto namin? wow magic??? kahit mag photo ops pa kyo lagi nagdadasal di mababago ang katotohanan na Nagnakaw kayo ng boto. 😂
@Yoyamomi hoped for the late Jesse Robredo‘s death certificate to go missing.
@aileenasami questioned Aika’s education in Harvard
Is that what they teach in Harvard? 25% logic?🤣
Another netizen connected the tweet to the alleged cheating during the elections.
Antonio Vasquez also said that even if the government has Trillanes’ amnesty records, it doesn’t mean that he’s already qualified to receive amnesty.
Yun lang ba ang basehan dun?! Mag isip ka naman! Kaya nga hinahanapan ng kopya si Trillanes! Isa pa, wala siyang admission of guilt which is a requisite for amnesty! Sayang ka iha!
Robredo has yet to respond to the criticisms against her and her mother.
On August 28, a Rappler journalist slammed a supporter of former senator Bongbong Marcos for spreading ‘fake news’ against them and Vice President Leni Robredo.
A certain Daniel Panganiban on Twitter called the attention of followers of the President to warn them about an alleged attack of Robredo‘s “troll handlers.”
LEAKED: Meeting daw ng mga “millennials” a.k.a troll handlers ni Vice. Word to me is that they are going to get aggressive in the next weeks. Guess who kung sino kasama nila..
Credits to the owner of the photo.
Rappler’s Malacanang Palace reporter, Pia Ranada-Robles, immediately clarified the misinformation and said that the “troll handlers” do not actually work for the Vice President, but for news site Rappler.
Proof that false information is being spread about Rappler: Some Rappler reporters were just having a working lunch last Friday near our office when someone (likely a fellow diner at the restaurant) took our photo and claimed it was a meeting of VP Robredo’s “troll handlers.”
Robles then added that it was just a simple photo of people having a meal together. She identified the reporters she was with as Patricia Evangelista, Paterno Esmaquel II, Mara Cepeda, and Camille Elemia.
Nothing in the photo supports this claim. It’s really just a photo of people having lunch!
The people in the photo: Reporters Patricia Evangelista, Paterno Esmaquel II, Mara Cepeda, Camille Elemia, me.
The reporter then recalled the time that people spread the fake news of her being the daughter-in-law of journalist Raissa Robles. She also encouraged everyone to spread her clarification to debunk false claims.
This reminds me of that also false info that I am the daughter-in-law of Raissa Robles. Some people actually still believe this lie!
If you’ve seen this lunch photo in your newsfeed, I hope you can share this post of mine to debunk it. Or tell your Facebook friend who shared it that they are just spreading lies. Thank you!
Back on Twitter, a certain Don Kevin Hapal defended the reporters, telling Panganiban that he just made up the context of the photo.
“Guess who kung sino kasama nila”
Lol. No need to guess. Those are all Rappler reporters holding a meeting. Reporters all over the world do that. Taking a picture and lying about its context just to badmouth others is just pathetic.
Panganiban replied that the information was not from him but from a “very reliable friend.”
Don’t even bother commenting if you were not there when they are having that stuff. That is a shamful way to gain credibility. Photo and feedback was not mine but was given by a very reliable friend. KTnxBye crybaby!!
The Twitter user has deleted his controversial tweet.
