A Filipina student brings pride to all Filipinos as she graduated with the highest distinction in the largest public university in Thailand.
At Ramkhanmhaeng University (RU) Institute of International Studies in Bangkok, Thailand, a Filipino student named Nicole Louise Nicolas Poblete graduated Summa cum laude with a degree in Mass Communication major in Radio and TV Broadcasting.
Poblete originally came from Laoag City, Philippines with her parents. But because they have decided to become missionaries in Thailand, they left the Philippines.
Both parents are serving in church, her Father Aldrin is a senior pastor at Every Nation Church in Bangkok and her mother, aside from serving in church, also works as a teacher.
To adjust to her new way of life in Thailand was not easy, as she recalls she needed to strive so hard to adopt to the Thai culture and language.
“Nahirapan talaga akong mag-adjust sa culture at language noong una. My friends and the people I’ve met, sila talaga (ang)tumulong sa akin.”
In an interview with ABS-CBN, she said that she felt so thankful and blessed for having the opportunity to have an education.
“Not everyone has the privilege to get education. If you are fortunate enough, make the most out of it and be thankful.”
During Poblete’s elementary and high school days in Laoag City, she was a consistent honor student and even in Thailand she never failed to make her parents proud of her.
To inspire everyone, she shared her advice on how to achieve your goals in life.
“My advice when it comes to success is to not wait for life to be easy kasi kung ‘yun ang hinihintay n’yo, wala tayong mapapala.”
Poblete shared with PinoyThaiyo a quote that she offered her success to God and to use it to help others.
“The role of education is not simply to make us smart. God has gifted us with talents and abilities to be used, ultimately, for His plan; that is where education comes in, to hone our God-given skills to serve a purpose greater than ourselves.”

People have been buzzing around the happenings before the Miss Universe 2018 coronation night that happened in Bangkok, Thailand. There has been controversies, blunders, wardrobe malfunctions, and viral videos.
Among these is the video of Miss Peru Romina Lozano, who got mistaken for being the now-Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray. The beauty queen didn’t take it to heart though. The two have been previously compared as they have similar facial features.
When she was greeting people and taking photos with them, a man asking for a picture called her “Catriona” and she just laughed it off and proceeded to pose with him.
Miss Universe coronation night was held on December 17 in Bangkok, Thailand.
Miss Universe Albania Trejsi Sedjini was one of the trending candidates of the 67th Miss Universe.
When she was on her way back to Albania on Wednesday, December 19, she really wanted to take home the gifts that her Thai fans gave her. But there was one problem: she didn’t have enough money to pay the baggage fee.
Her Thai supporters found out about her situation while she was at the Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, Thailand. They decided to help her and contribute their own money to pay the THB 5,225 excess baggage fee.
Korakot Mussamont Chansiri, who was one of Sedjini’s supporters at the airport, shared the story of the Albanian beauty queen.
She said that while Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray was boarding a private plane, Miss Albania was opening her suitcase to see what she can leave behind.
The beauty queen thanked her Thai fans via a post on Instagram. “Thank you my Thai fan for making me happy. Thank you for the support, the gifts and the love that you share everyday for me. You all are so real and lovely,” she wrote as a caption.

It seems like the whole world had their eyes on the newly crowned Miss Universe 2018, Catriona Gray.
But as majority are celebrating, the news of one candidate’s unfortunate story have not been talked about often.
Miss Sierra Leone, Marie Esther Bangura, was unable to join the pageant. It was not because of anything scandalous, but because she arrived late in Bangkok, Thailand.
She has failed to meet the schedule set by the organizers, which was December 2. But it was already December 8 when Bangura arrived.
Despite arriving a few days after the other candidates, she was still allowed to attend several activities in line with the pageant. She also received the warm welcome of the Thais.

So why didn’t she arrive on time? She faced some problems with her visa and it took her two weeks to travel from her country to Nigeria where she applied for a visa to the Royal Thai Embassy.
Adding to this, the also had to travel to Thailand by sea!
But the beauty queen maintained her positive mindset as she expressed that she still had a wonderful time even if she was not allowed to join the pageant proper.
“I always wanted to represent my country and that’s why I tried so hard to be here. Since I’m not competing, I still feel good because I got to meet people and learn new things.”
So what’s her silver lining? She’s allowed to join the competition in the following year.

Miss Philippines Catriona Gray broke the tradition of the Filipiniana outfit during the pre-pageant show for the 2018 Miss Universe in Bangkok, Thailand.
Along with other 92 candidates from across the globe, Gray sported a colorful costume that is dubbed LUZVIMINDA: Magdiwang. Lumaban. Pagyamanin. It became one of the most applauded during the show.
In an interview with ABS-CBN, she said that she intended to really “represent the Philippines in all forms”.
Gray added, “When people see the Philippine sash, it’s just a word on a sash, but really, we’re made up of so many different places and so much different aspects to our culture.”
The festive and colorful attire was a collaboration between lantern-maker Eric Quiwa, fashion designer Jearson Dimavivas, architect and artist Carlos Buendia Jr., and well-known shoemaker Jojo Bragais.
Buendia explained that Luzon is represented by the Christmas lantern from Pampanga with a brass border designed and made in Apalit. Painted at the back of the lantern are historical scenes with inscriptions of Lupang Hinirang written in Baybayin.
Additional details were written in Gray Instagram account, “The island group of VISAYAS is represented by a body suit with authentic “tattoo designs” embellished with crystals derived from patterns used by the “PINTADOS” who are indigenous peoples found in various islands in this part of the Philippines. The tattoo patterns are authentic and based from the manusript “BOXER CODEX” written in 1590.
“The island group of MINDANAO is represented by an authentic ‘HEADPIECE & BRASS ACCESSORIES’ from the province of South Cotabato and customized KNEE-HIGH BOOTS with embroidered designs inspired by different indigenous textile patterns from the southern part of the Philippines”
