18-year-old girl speaks up on Anne Curtis and Ella Cruz twerking on TV

Eighteen-year-old Camille Laroco posted on Facebook her insights on the dance move that’s taking over the nation. No, we’re not talking about the Nae Nae.

Laroco could not stop herself from commenting when she watched twerking performances of teen actress Ella Cruz and It’s Showtime host Anne Curtis. Laroco said that while she was a “Kapamilya,” i.e., a supporter of ABS-CBN shows, these performances crossed the line for her.

Many expect young women her age to appreciate such fads, but Laroco thought otherwise. While dancing provocatively is one thing, twerking is a whole different thing. Twerking is defined as a dance to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance.

Twerking wasn’t actually a sexy dance previously. It is attributed to several traditional West African dances, most notably the “mapouka,” hailing from the Cote d’Ivoire. It is known colloquially as “la dance du fessier,” or “dance of the behind.” However, it made its way to American clubs and was particularly popularized by American singer-actress Miley Cyrus during the Video Music Awards in 2013. The rest is “sexy” history. It made its way to the Philippines and our local actresses are getting in the groove.

Una, si Ella Cruz. I know, she can dance. Pero puro twerk na lang ba sasayawin niya sa lahat ng shows na pupuntahan niya? Bata pa siya para magsayaw ng kalaswaan. Nagiging epitomy (sic) of f*ckgirls na siya. [First there was Ella Cruz. I know she can dance. But is twerking all she would do whenever she would guest at shows? She too young to dance such moves. She’s becoming the epitome of f*ckgirls],” said Laroco.

Next she commented on Anne Curtis. Laroca said even though she was a big fan, she thought Anne should have known better than to twerk on the popular noontime variety show It’s Showtime which includes children in their audience.
