Super Tekla became emotional when telling about his backstory and his journey from the mountains of Cotabato to his success in showbusiness.
“Bata palang ako, ayaw ko nang madilim … Gusto ko, nung bata ako, makakakita ako ng ilaw, makakakita ako ng sasakyan kasi nasa bundok po talaga kami, out of civilization. Hindi po naabot ng kuryente, ilang ilog ang tinatawid namin. Umiiyak po ako. Kaya nung high school ako, lumabas na ako, bumaba ako ng bundok at sa city na ako tumira,” related Tekla, Romeo Librada in real life.
A loving husband and father, he tried his luck in Manila to bring his family out of poverty.
“Nung comedy bar days ko, doon medyo okay naman, may kita. Pero ako, hindi nag-sink in sa utak ko na, dito, may chance ako sa showbiz. Bumagsak ako sa comedy bar dahil nagkaroon ako ng isang napakabigat na depresyon sa life ko. Dumating ako sa puntong natutulog na ako sa kalsada kasi wala akong shelter, wala akong lahat.”
He also told of his story when he had his big break in the Will of Fortune show and his hesitation to join because of fear, but which he later accepted.
“Siguro doon talaga ako nabe-belong and then suddenly, nangangailangan si Kuya Wil ng komedyante. Okay, so naghahanap siya ng karakter na bakla. Eh hindi naman ako bakla. Karakter, nakakatawa. Apat na beses ko atang ini-snob si Kuya Wil sa show na ‘yun. Ayaw kong tanggapin yung offer, kasi, unang-una, natatakot ako sa kanya pero nung panlima, wala na akong magawa kasi pina-search, pinahanap talaga ako.”
According to him, despite everything that had happened (referring to his controversy in Wowowin), he is thankful to the GMA Network for their thrust and support.
“And then, ‘yun na nga ‘yung time na ‘di ko alam, ‘yung pagsali ko sa ‘Wil of Fortune,’ ‘yun ‘yung shining moment ko. After many years na pinagtiisan ko, ‘yun pala ‘yung tinatawag na right timing… Thank you, GMA. Despite everything, ‘yung tiwala kasi napakahirap ibigay ‘yun. Thank you, thank you so much.”
Now, he co-stars on the hit comedy show, ‘The Boobay and Tekla Show,’ along with Boobay which airs every Sunday night on GMA Network.
