People in China are taking gutter oil from the sewers and using it for cooking

When traveling to China, be careful about what you eat, specially if you’re in the countryside. It is best to exercise caution at all times as there continues to be a rampant problem with the use of so-called “gutter oil” for cooking food.

Commercial-grade cooking oil can be quite expensive. Thus, some enterprising yet unscrupulous  people in China have found a way to cook fried food without spending a lot of money: by buying or making their own gutter oil.

This disgusting oil might look like your ordinary cooking oil, but this substance was extracted from liquid taken from the sewers.

One can only imagine the amount of pathogens and contaminants in the oil. Even if oil reaches temperatures of 200 °C for frying, it would not be enough to eliminate all the contaminants in this yucky oil.

These Chinese traders have found a way to extract and refine the oil from these dirty liquids inside makeshift buildings – and the average consumer just might be tricked into thinking the processed oil is real cooking oil because, as Creepy Basement pointed out, this looks, tastes, and feels just like the real thing.
