LGBTQIA+ Community react to Pope Francis’ statement about gay couples

He stated that they are also “children of God” which means that they have the right to have a family.

  • Netizens cheered Pope Francis for saying that there should be a civil union law that will protect members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Pope Francis has made a bold statement that he thinks that homosexuals should also be protected by civil union laws.

In a documentary released on October 21, he said that members of the LGBTQ+ community are also children of God and that they don’t deserve to be condemned for being who they are.

“Homosexual people have a right to be in a family. They are children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out or be made miserable over it,” he explained in ‘Francesco‘ by Oscar-nominated director Evgeny Afineevsky.

“What we have to create is a civil union law. That way they are legally covered. I stood up for that.”

When the pope was the archbishop of Buenos Aires, he opposed the legislation to approve same-sex marriage but stood beside the legal protection of the rights of gay couples.

Filipino members and supporters of the LGBTQ+ community expressed their happiness upon the pope’s sentiment.

“This is huge!” Mike Navallo said in one tweet about the topic.

A netizen said that the pope’s statement just shows that homophobia is a choice.

Another emphasized that straight people are in no way greater than the members of the LGBTQ+ and with that, the civil union should not be a privilege but a right.

Someone also said that the statement “won’t sit well” with those who are strongly against gay people because of their religious beliefs.

A netizen pointed out that respecting gay people is really not that hard.

According to the Catholic Church, homosexual tendencies are not sinful but homosexual acts are. However, homosexuals should still be treated with dignity.
