What can Willie Revillame do as a politician? Netizens question TV host’s political experience

Netizens think the idea of Revillame becoming president is even a bigger joke than the possibility of him running for Senate

President Rodrigo Duterte is more than willing to see “Wowowin” host Willie Revillame run for a senatorial seat in next year’s elections.

Duterte said he always remembers Revillame because he thinks he has what it takes to be a senator.

Matagal na tayong ‘di nagkita pero palagi kitang naaalala dahil gusto ko sanang maging senador ka,” Duterte said in a video addressed to Revillame.

The president is not pressuring him though and is leaving a slot open for the comedian in case he changes his mind.

Kung ayaw mo na talaga eh di puwede na tayong mag-usap ulit,” Duterte added, alluding to Revillame’s uncertainty on transitioning to politics.

Duterte commended Revillame’s influence on the public.

Bilib ako sa appeal mo sa masa,” he praised the TV host.

According to one entertainment columnist, Revillame had a sit-down with Duterte and his long-time aide Sen. Christopher “Bong” Go last February. The president thanked Revillame for running Wowowin, a program that caters to the less fortunate.

Willie, mahal kita. Pinapanood kita. Maraming salamat sa ginagawa mo sa ating mga kababayan. Magkasama tayo sa pagtulong. Kasama tayo sa grupo. Kasama ka namin sa grupo,” Duterte said.

The president’s new pick doesn’t seem to sit well with netizens, with some questioning what Revillame can bring to the table as he has no known experience in politics.

It could be difficult for the smarter ones to even consider voting for Revillame.

However, Revillame winning a seat in the senate is entirely possible. He has the popularity, the name, and the reputation.

The end portion of the video message was cut, and according to Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque, Duterte also said he Revillame has a good chance of winning the presidency.

“I have a copy of the video greeting of the President. Ang sabi nga po niya tumakbo ka ng senador pero sa bandang huli rin sabi rin po niya na pu-puwedeng magpresidente si Willie Revillame ‘no,” Roque said in a briefing when asked to confirm the authenticity of the video.

“It’s a video greeting of sorts [so it’s not a] new meeting between Willie and the President,” he added.

Netizens think the idea of Revillame becoming president is even a bigger joke than the possibility of him running for Senate.

Revillame is loved by the public and his fans think politics will only change him for the worse.
