CDO shopping mall faces criticisms after drawing crowds for a warehouse sale

Witnesses stated that the social distancing and health protocols were not followed by the consumers.

  • Limketkai Mall immediately stopped the warehouse sale of one of its merchants after around 500 people rushed to buy branded sports apparel.
  • The local government stated that the promo is suspended until the mall and shop have reassured them the guidelines will be strictly enforced.

A Facebook page named Hugot Byahero shared images of a large number of people lined up for a Bagsak Presyo sale at a mall in Cagayan de Oro.

The lack of social distancing was definitely noticeable in the photos.

A store in Limketkai Mall offered branded apparel and shoes such as Adidas, Nike, New Balance, and Pro Touch Sports at discounted prices up to 80 percent off.

This led to a lot of people to crowd into the mall and neglect physical distancing protocols.

The mall halted the sale but will still receive penalties and sanctions for the protocol breach.

“Due to the unexpected number of shoppers of The Warehouse Clearance Sale, some safety health protocols were not observed. Please be advised that our management has temporarily stopped the said activity at the Atrium which was thereafter seconded and approved by the city government,” Limketkai center said in a statement.

The city Regulatory Compliance Board (RCB) head, Lawyer Jose Edgardo Uy, stated that the inter-agency task force’s law enforcement unit is currently investigating the matter.

Uy then stated that they have ordered the suspension of the promotional sale until the stores could assure the government and mall management that its customers will practice basic health protocols.

Dr. Charles Marquez, who was at the mall to administer flu and pneumonia vaccinations inside a pharmacy, said that there were at least 500 people who went to the store.

He added that the customers were standing close to each other.

Chair of the council’s trade and commerce George Goking said that they have reminded the establishments to strictly implement guidelines.

“We are not against the holding of sale and similar promotions, but they must keep in mind our health protocols such as the wearing of face mask, face shield, disinfection, and observance of social distancing,” Goking said.
