Netizens liken Mike Defensor to Gollum character from ‘The Lord of the Rings’

Just like Gollum, Mike Defensor started as a prominent, young leader yet ended up as a target of criticisms and judgments because of his imprudence.

AnaKalusugan Partylist Representative Mike Defensor is being compared to the character of Gollum from The Lord of the Rings by netizens.

When he was studying at the University of the Philippines, Defensor was a student leader and activist.

He became a member of various organizations such as: Kabataang Liberal ng Pilipinas, National Union of Students in the Philippines, Alpha Sigma Fraternity, and Youth Council of the Philippines.

Defensor is also one of the well-known young politicians of his time. He was even listed as a noteworthy Philippine government official by Marquis Who’s Who.

His political record was outstanding and was labeled as “youngest-ever” in almost everything he accomplished.

However, this record was stained during the administration of Gloria Arroyo where he served as chief-of-staff. The job to maintain a “desirable” public image of the President caused him to earn criticisms from fellow politicians and citizens.

On the other hand, Gollum of The Lord of the Rings was the fourth Ring-Bearer after Sauron, Isildur, and Déagol.

Sméagol, later known as Gollum, became obsessed with the ring and eventually was corrupted by it. This caused damage to Gollum physically and mentally.

Gollum had a habit of producing “a horrible swallowing noise in his throat”.

His character symbolizes greed, ambition, and cleverness. However, he also represents goodness, which in his case was long-lost and forgotten.

Just like Gollum, Mike Defensor started as a prominent, young leader yet ended up as a target of criticisms and judgments because of his imprudence.

Defensor continues to earn ire of netizens for his comments against ABS-CBN. Defensor previously claimed that he was neutral on the franchise issue yet he expressed biased opinions against the network.
