Social media personality Sachzna Laparan has issued an apology to Angelica Jones amid their differing accounts over the 2019 revival of ‘Miss Flawless,’ which Laparan recorded with Flow G and Bosx1ne.
In a video statement released Tuesday, September 1, Laparan expressed her respect for Jones and apologized for the misunderstanding between them.
“Malaki po ang respeto ko kay Angelica Jones. At pasensya na po kung nagkaroon tayo ng hindi pagkakaintindihan,” Laparan said.
She also said she no longer wants to embrace the ‘Miss Flawless’ title if doing so would affect her peace of mind.
“At this point in my life, hindi ko na po hangad na i-embrace pa ang bansag na ‘Miss Flawless’ kung ang magiging kapalit naman nito ay ’yong peace of mind ko,” she said. “’Yon lang po. Salamat.”
The statement came after Jones discussed the issue during an appearance on the vodcast “Your Honor.”
Jones, who popularized ‘Miss Flawless’ in the early 2000s, claimed that she had not been asked for permission in connection with the revival.
She also recalled that she and Laparan were supposed to meet regarding the project, but the meeting did not push through.
“To be honest with you, nakaka-offend ’yon on my part kasi elected official ako and then nag-react ’yong tourism ng Laguna na ang sabi ay hindi raw tuloy ang shooting, hindi raw tuloy ’yong pagpunta nila doon,” Jones said.
Jones currently serves as a member of the Laguna Provincial Board representing the Third District.
Laparan disputed Jones’ account that she had not been approached about the project.
According to Laparan, her director and production team communicated with Jones regarding the revival. She said she has records of calls and text messages but could not publicly release them because of what she described as legal considerations.
Laparan also said she and her mother met songwriter and composer Lito Camo twice regarding their planned use of the chorus of ‘Miss Flawless.’
Her mother, Christine Laparan Policarpio, had earlier issued a statement claiming that Laparan’s camp went through what she described as the proper process in producing their version of the song.
According to Policarpio, their director communicated with Jones about the revival. She also said she and Laparan personally approached Camo twice to inform him about their planned use of the song’s chorus for the version featuring Laparan, Flow G, and Bosx1ne.
Laparan said Camo gave them the go-ahead to proceed with the shoot.
These statements represent the account of Laparan and her camp regarding the steps they said they took before producing the revival. They do not, by themselves, establish what permissions or licenses may have been legally required for the use of the song.
Laparan also said Jones was initially supposed to appear in the music video.
According to her account, the team contacted Jones during the shoot, but their schedules did not align. Laparan said they had also considered shooting in Laguna because of Jones’ connection to the province.
During a discussion on ‘Fast Talk,’ Boy Abunda relayed Laparan’s account that their director had invited Jones to make a cameo in the music video.
According to Abunda, Laparan said Jones allegedly declined at one point because, as a Laguna board member, she could no longer be seen dancing in the manner associated with the original ‘Miss Flawless.’
Abunda also relayed Laparan’s claim that their director tried several times to show Jones the finished video before its release but was unable to do so because of her schedule.
Jones, however, gave a different account.
She said she had agreed to participate in the music video because the project would help promote Laguna.
According to Jones, she was given a shooting schedule but was informed on the day itself that the shoot had been canceled.
She said she later learned from a Laguna tourism officer that the production had pushed through at another location.
Jones said the experience offended her, particularly because arrangements had reportedly already been made involving the province’s tourism office.
The two sides have therefore presented different accounts regarding their communications and the arrangements surrounding the 2019 revival.
‘Miss Flawless,’ released in 2003, became closely associated with Jones and her showbiz moniker during the 2000s.
Laparan’s latest statement focused on apologizing for the misunderstanding and distancing herself from the ‘Miss Flawless’ label, saying she now values her peace of mind more than the title.
As of writing, Jones has yet to publicly respond to Laparan’s latest statement.
