Why did Joey de Leon downplay the push to make TVJ National Artists?

Joey de Leon reacts to push for TVJ as National Artists

Veteran television host and member of the iconic trio TVJ (Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto, and Joey de Leon), Joey de Leon, recently shared his reaction to proposals advocating for the group to be conferred the title of National Artists, along with their long-standing program ‘Eat Bulaga.’

De Leon took to Instagram to disclose that there have been suggestions to grant them the prestigious recognition.

However, he expressed reluctance towards the idea, stating, “May nag-suggest gawin na raw kaming National Artists pati Eat Bulaga. Sabi ko WAG NA” (Someone suggested that we should be made National Artists along with Eat Bulaga. I said, let’s not).

Rather than being labeled as National Artists, De Leon humorously proposed a tongue-in-cheek alternative, suggesting they be dubbed as “Function All Artists.” He cited their extensive contributions spanning various fields such as radio, television, newspapers, recording, movies, arts, and even politics.

“Gawin nyo na lang kaming FUNCTION ALL ARTISTS! Eh kasi we’ve covered nearly everything — radio, TV, newspaper, recording, movies, arts, politics, etc. pero seriously, starting today watch our Lenten offerings in EB. Thanks!” he quipped.

De Leon wrapped up his statement by extending an invitation to viewers to tune in to ‘Eat Bulaga’ and enjoy their Lenten Special, highlighting their diverse talents beyond their usual hosting roles.

In a separate lighthearted remark, De Leon humorously celebrated the milestone of ‘Eat Bulaga’ reaching 14,000 days on air, joking about their status as the “longest-running” noontime show due to their frequent transitions from one network to another since 1979.
