ABS-CBN shutdown inspired Kapamilya talents to enter politics

Mainly because of ABS-CBN’s unforgettable shutdown last year, two Kapamilya talents Jerry B. Grácio and Arjo Atayde are running for a seat in Congress.

Mainly because of ABS-CBN’s unforgettable shutdown last year, two Kapamilya talents Jerry B. Grácio and Arjo Atayde are running for a seat in Congress.

Sylvia Sanchez, Atayde’s mother, recently revealed in a virtual press conference for the upcoming finale of Huwag Kang Mangamba that her son got inspired to run for Quezon City’s 1st congressional district seat in the 2022 elections. She mentioned that it’s due to the denial of ABS-CBN’s bid for franchise renewal.

Kabado, yes, pero suporta, 1,000%.” she added.

Atayde has always dreamed of becoming a public servant since high school, but Sanchez explained to Atayde that he can [still] help the public out in other ways.

Sagot niya, ‘Mas makakatulong ako kapag nasa puwesto ako, mommy.‘”

The award-winning actor couldn’t believe that his home network was forced to go off the air. It left thousands unemployed.

Believing that her son’s pure intentions, Sanchez decided to support his decision.

Yes, because of ABS kaya tatakbo si Arjo. Isa iyan sa reasons.” she said.

A former writer for ABS-CBN Jerry B. Grácio is also looking to win a congressional seat for similar reasons.

Grácio aims to fight for the workers who got laid-off due to the shutdown. Earlier in October, the writer accepted the second seat nomination from labor party-list Kapamilya ng Manggagawang Pilipino.

He was hesitant at first but eventually gave in.

In the service of the Filipino.’” he added.

The 2018 FAMAS award for Best Screenplay recipient has always resented politics but could no longer sit on the sidelines while former ABS-CBN employees continue to struggle amid the pandemic.

On the other hand, former ABS-CBN actor Raymond Bagatsing aims to take the place of Yul Servo as a congressman in Manila’s 3rd district.

Bagatsing and Servo both worked under ABS-CBN. The latter was one of the 70 representatives who decided to shut the network down.
