Kapamilya singer Sheryn Regis shares her #AsianHateCrimes first-hand experience during recent trip to the US in December 2020

Regis said the customs officer asked her if she was Chinese, thinking that any Asian traveler with similar features hails from China.

No one is exempted from Asian hate in the United States—not even Kapamilya Singer Sheryn Regis.

“Isa iyon sa mga dailan kung bakit hindi ako bumalik doon (sa United States) kasi I really look Asian,” Regis said, straight from the release of her latest single with Star Music.

She recalled her experience during her last trip back to the United States as not being the best. “I went back to the US last December 2020. I had a mask on and everything, yet I was still stopped at Customs.”

Regis said the customs officer asked her if she was Chinese, thinking that any Asian traveler with similar features hails from China.

She even said she has heard people at the airport saying Beijing “manufactured” the virus, which only fuelled hate against Asians more.

“Natatakot ako para sa mga kababayan natin—hindi lang para sa mga Chinese at iba pang Asians—kasi biktima din sila, especially in California,” she added.

The hashtags #StopAsianHate has remained one of the microblogging site Twitter’s trending hashtags after numerous accounts of racially-triggered violence surfaced on US news.

The State of California is home to the largest Filipino community in the United States and is the largest Asian ethnic group in the state.

Regis also said it was a sad day when the entertainment industry took the biggest hit during the start of the pandemic.

“I felt bad. Hindi lang kaming mga kilala ang crowd-pleasers—pati yung ibang mga musikero, nawalan din,” she said, though she does understand why it had to happen.

Events like concerts and mall shows tend to draw large crowds—the very thing which will worsen the country’s current case count, which stands at close to 10,000 today, March 26.

She did, however, do her part to help. Regis recently headlined an online concert with JCI Philippines for the benefit of those who were displaced in the music industry.

Now, Netizens can look forward to hearing more from the “Crystal Voice of Asia” as she releases her latest single Tulad ng Dati under Star Music.

Tulad ng Dati is now available on all digital music and streaming platforms.
