- Kabataan Party-list urged to stop the K to12 program
- Sarah Elago states that the K to 12 program is not for resolving the country’s declining quality of education
- The program was implemented for experimentation and to give false hopes to the youth
In May 2013, former President Benigno Aquino III approved Republic Act (RA) 10533, signing into law the K+12 program. But now, under the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte, the Kabataan Party-list urged the government to stop the program.
Kabataan Rep. Sarah Elago filed a resolution to the administration to review and stop the K-12 program after the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) chairman Prospero de Vera III admitted shortcomings of the program, like the late implementation of the projects and non-provision of salary for the project- based researchers.
Elago stated that after filing House Resolution No. 2557, the K to 12 program is not for resolving the country’s declining quality of education.
“We have said time and again that the K to 12 program will not answer the country’s declining quality of education,” Elago said
In addition, she also said that the program was implemented for experimentation and to give false hopes to the youth.

“Kung mayroon mang nagawa ang K to 12, ito ay pag-eksperimentuhan, pagkakitaan, pahirapan, at paasahin ang mga kabataan. Dagdag na taon, dagdag na bayarin at dagdag na pasakit lamang, at wala ang mga pangako ng maayos na edukasyon at trabaho,” she added.
Before the implementation of the K to 12 education program, the government explained the advantage of the program. It said that “students of the new system will graduate at the age of 18 and will be ready for employment, entrepreneurship, middle-level skills development, and higher education upon graduation.”
But recently, Senior High School graduates were reported as having difficulties in having opportunities to be employed by companies, due to their educational background. Some companies are still in doubt of hiring senior high school graduates.
“Medyo nag-aalangan pa kasi. Unang-una, makikita natin na hindi sila handa tumanggap ng K-12 kasi ‘yung mga requirements nila ay only offered to college graduates,” shared Philip Gioca, country manager of Jobstreet.com Philippines.

In connection with this, the Kabataan Party-list filed nine resolutions which included their urging to stop the K to 12 program.
