Here’s Why You Should Stop Using Your Phones At Night

  • Using your phones before going to sleep at night may result to greater risk of cancer and depression.
  • It is advised to turn-off the electronics one to two hours before bedtime to get away from artificial light.

As we have our day jobs or school in majority of the day, most of us only have the nighttime to relax and update ourselves about what’s happening in the worldwide web.

As artificial light is one of the most prominent causes of sleep deprivation, the light in our smartphones, tablets, and laptops are actually worse! It is called “blue light” and it messes with a person’s sleep cycle by forcing our bodies to stay awake.

You can actually see that the rise of insomnia does coincide with the rise of technology. Lack of sleep can cause breast, colorectal, and prostate cancer. It can also make the brain have difficulty in learning.

Other than keeping you awake, using your gadgets at night can also damage your eyesight. Blue light can damage our vision by harming the retina and cause macular degeneration which is the loss of central vision.

It can also cause a higher risk of cancer. Melatonin is one of the most important antioxidants in our body. Since it is suppressed by blue light emitted from smartphones and tablets, your body is essentially being depleted from this powerful nutrient.

Lack of melatonin means greater risk of cellular damage, higher inflammation rates, and disruption of normal immune function.

People with low melatonin levels and are sleep deprived are also more prone to depression.

These can also be the reason for weight gain. The factors can mess with a person’s hormones that control hunger.

So how can you avoid the risks mentioned? It is advised to turn off your electronics one to two hours before bedtime.
