Metro Manila Council prohibits driver-only private vehicles on EDSA during rush hours

  • MMC approved the banning of single-passenger private cars along EDSA during rush hours.
  • Adding to that, all lanes of EDSA will be available for the travel of high occupancy vehicles.

The Metro Manila Council (MMC), composed of NCR mayors, approved the resolution that bans one-man private cars along EDSA.

General Manager of Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Jojo Garcia said that under the resolution, all lanes of EDSA will be allotted for high occupancy vehicles (HOV) or vehicles with at least two individuals.

“We have a data that 70 percent of vehicles along EDSA carry only the driver.”

“Yung sa HOV in-aprubahan din ng MMC na during rush hours sa Edsa kung pwede dalawa ang sakay sa kotse. Kung mag-isa lang di pwede dumaan during rush hours sa buong EDSA.”

He added that the HOVs used to occupy a single lane only, but they can now travel in all lanes of EDSA.

“HOV tayo noon is single lane lang, ngayon gagawin natin buong Edsa na during rush hour.”

MMDA clarified that the MMC has yet to set the date and implementing guidelines of the said resolution. Garcia also added that it has yet to be determined if the whole stretch of EDSA will be covered.

“Hindi pa naibibigay kung hanggang saan lang kasi may gagawin pa na adjustments. Pwedeng Balintawak to Magallanes depende saka rush hour lang.”

MMDA has received the green light to schedule a dry-run of the ban.

“We are not in a hurry to implement the policy as we want to make sure everything is in order.”
