“My dad is the ultimate handyman!” Daughter talks about her father working as “ASAP” floor director

  • Daughter of single dad Rene Dela Cruz tells about how her father has helped her reach where she is now
  • Rene Dela Cruz is currently ASAP’s floor director. He has been working at ABS-CBN for 30 years.

Young professional Anna Dela Cruz told Pep.ph about the life lessons that she learned from her dad, Rene Dela Cruz, who is currently the floor director of ABS-CBN’s Sunday noontime show, ASAP.

Rene started his career with the Kapamilya network in 1986 in the shows Palibhasa Lalake, Dick and Carmi, and Abangan sa Susunod na Kabanata.

He is now celebrating his 30th year in the company.

Anna shared that she has a common denominator with her dad, which is being temperamental.  She also stated the three most important philosophies that her dad lives by.

“Dad as a parent, as a friend, and as a professional share a common denominator—doing the right thing, no shortcuts, or you face his fury!

He passed down to me his temperament, so don’t you be wasting our time with nonsense!

Integrity, ambition, and humility are three of the most important philosophies Dad lives by and continues to impart with me.”

Work in the entertainment company is never easy. It includes irregular schedules and sleepless nights. But in spite all of the hardships, Rene still managed to be an effective single dad to Anna as he still possesses the strict parental quality that most Filipinos have.

“My dad was and still is a strict parent—which isn’t surprising and is very typical of a Filipino parent,” Anna recalls.

I remember when I was a little kid in grade school and refused to go to class on one particular day.

Dad went into my room and asked if I was ok. I told him I didn’t feel like [going to school].

He basically said that it was a lame excuse to miss out on education, but he relented and told me to rest and prepare for a new day so it won’t happen again.”

With that, Anna credits her self discipline to her dad, and basically everything she needed to know about life. She shared that her dad didn’t fail to teach her a lot of practical things such as car maintenance, house maintenance, career development, how to deal with people around you, as well as financial and resource frugality.

She also revealed that her dad never really babied or spoiled her when as a child. He always looked at her like she’s and adult no matter what age she was in.

Now that Anna is based in Texas, and is having the life of her own, she never forgets to apply the life lessons that he taught her.

“He’s still my voice of reason and, once in a while, he would remind me to slow down and think twice before dashing off with a decision, which is never a bad idea.

He reminds me always that life can be cruel, but I can always have a proactive attitude and make the best of it…

I’m blessed to have him as my dad, and he really makes me proud to be a Dela Cruz!

Love you so much, Dad!”
