Man tries to smuggle 9,000 memory cards taped around legs

Maybe he needed to back up some files? A LOT of files.

An unidentified man was caught trying to smuggle mobile phone memory cards from Hong Kong to Shenzen, China at the end of February. The cards—over 9,000 of them—were taped around the man’s legs, the South China Morning Post reports. The total cost of the cards would amount to nearly 100,000 Yuan or about PhP719,000. The man allegedly even tried to bribe customs officials, offering them 50,000 Yuan (almost PhP360,000) for his release.

The Morning Post explained that smuggling electronic goods from Hong Kong to Mainland China was a common occurrence as electronics are relatively cheaper in Hong Kong, which is a duty-free port where sales taxes are not levied on such products. This fact, perhaps, is making smugglers a bit over-eager. Hours before the man’s arrest, Shenzen customs officials apprehended an elderly woman who also tried to sneak in memory cards taped around her legs and waist.
