Chinese couple sell 18-day-old daughter for iPhone

What would you do to get an iPhone?

A man in China sold his own 18-day-old infant daughter online to get the mobile device. The man, identified as a certain A Duan, from Fujian Province, China, apparently found a buyer online and agreed to sell his child for 23,000 Yuan (almost PhP16,000.) Aside from the iPhone, A Duan was allegedly planning to buy a motorbike with the money as well.

The unidentified buyer transacted with A Duan on behalf of his sister. The buyer then turned himself over to police after the deal was done.

A Duan and his wife, a certain Xiao Mei, were both 19 years old when they got pregnant. Xiao Mei works part-time jobs, while A Duan spends his days frequenting internet cafes. Both do not have the financial capacity to raise a child and it is believed that the infant is still with the buyer’s sister, The Times of India reports.

As Xiao Mei is allegedly an accomplice in the crime, both parents are looking at spending time behind bars. Xiao Mei, however, insists on not knowing that the transaction was illegal. “I myself was adopted, and may people in my hometown send their kids to other people to raise them.” She explained to police. She will serve a two and a half year suspended sentence while her husband has been sentenced to three years.
