Woman stands up against catcallers on the streets

Like countless women in the country, Maxine Mae Liwanag is no stranger to catcalling.

But unlike many women, Liwanag decided to courageously speak out against cat callers in a viral post on Facebook which amassed almost 30,000 likes and more than 4,000 shares as of this writing.

Despite the fact that she wore a modest outfit, she got catcalled on her way to work on the morning of September 28.

According to Liwanag, she had been experiencing catcalling since high school. The countless incidents made her feel numerous negative emotions.

(To all the men reading this now, I want to tell you how it feels like for women when you do it to them. They feel ashamed, uncomfortable, afraid, angry, and disrespected.)

Furthermore, Liwanag observed that she doesn’t experience catcalling whenever she’s with her boyfriend or brother. She pointed out that catcalling men only respect ladies whenever they are accompanied by men.

Towards the end of her post, Liwanag encouraged women to stand up against this kind of men.

She wrote, “I encourage you to speak up. They may be physically stronger but if we show them resistance then maybe this unfathomable practice of catcalling will end. Or at least become illegal sa bansa natin.” (Or at least become illegal in our country.)
