Brain size has “little practical relevance” to intelligence, scientists claim

Having a big brain does not make you smarter, a study conducted by an international team of researchers claims.

In the study led by researchers at the University of Vienna, links between brain volume and IQ of 8,000 participants were examined.

Based on their findings, there is a robust but weak association between the size of the brain and IQ, regardless of the participant’s age and sex.

Although a certain association is observable, brain volume appears to be of only little practical relevance,” said Jakob Pietschnig of the Institute of Applied Psychology of the University of Vienna

Rather, brain structure and integrity appear to be more important as a biological foundation of IQ, whilst brain size works as one of many compensatory mechanisms of cognitive functions,” he added.

Moreover, people suffering from megalencephaly syndrome, a disorder in which the brain is abnormally large, usually score lower in IQ tests compared to average people.

When comparing different species, researchers suggest that brain structure is more relevant compared to brain volume.
