UPDATED: Netizen calls on hikers to Mt. Manalmon to help an elderly woman

It is nice to know that some people still take the initiative to help those who are in need.

Netizen Joy Chiong made a post about an old lady she met in San Miguel, Bulacan when she and her companions went to Mt. Manalmon. She described the “Nanay” as an 87-year-old who lives in a shack, all by herself. She gathers sampaloc or tamarind leaves around the area and sells them at the market. She uses her earnings to buy rice. When asked about the viand or ‘ulam’, she said:

Ay hindi naman ako nag-uulam dahil bigas lang ang kayang mabili ng pera (I don’t have viand because rice is all I can afford).”

She had 12 children, six of whom are already deceased  while the rest have families of their own. She’s been a widow for 30 years now. Nanay, Joy said, is not asking for help, but Joy thought she needed assistance. So she called on hikers, travellers, nature lovers, and generous people to visit Mt.Manalmon and go see Nanay, too. Some supplies like water, cooking materials, a sleeping mat, pillows, blanket, medicines, and probably battery-powered transistors and some spare batteries, would be very helpful to the old lady.

She also hopes kind-hearted people can provide a small sari-sari store for Nanay’s living.

“Please sacrifice your P500.00 dinner buffet para sa ikaka-happy ni Nanay (for Nanay’s happiness). Malaking bagay na sa kaniya ‘to. Balikan niyo siya (It would be of great help).”

Please please. BALIKAN NATIN SI NANAY. (Let’s go back and help her).”

Chiong asks hikers to pass by Nanay’s house whenever they go to Mt. Manalmon, and give her some food and supplies.
