Doctor slams Nancy Binay for saying a family of doctors is same as family of politicians

Netizen and doctor Toto Carandang reacted to Senator Nancy Binay’s statement when she rejected Senate Bill 2649 or the Anti-Political Dynasty Bill filed by Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago in 2011.

Sen. Binay compared a family of doctors to a family of politicians saying both were the same in terms of “dynasties.” Dr. Carandang, in rebuttal, posted an open letter to Binay saying doctors earn their degrees rather than depending on “popularity or [being elected] by democratic voting.” (see post here)

The University of the Philippines Philippine General Hospital doctor further said, “It’s sad you had to use that analogy to justify your rejection of the Anti-Dynasty Bill. People probably know the real reason behind it. And I think it’s not really because of a noble family practice or occupation.”

Carandang advised Binay that politicians like herself perhaps should “amass a significant amount of knowledge, lose hundreds or thousands of hours of sleep, spend a number of years studying and mastering your craft, and then take numerous exams before you can enter politics.”

Under SB 2649, only one family member will be allowed to hold public office whether on the local or national level. Binay’s reaction is expected as she and three other family members are incumbent officials: Nancy as senator; her brother Junjun as Makati mayor; her sister Abigail as Makati’s Second District representative, and her father Jejomar as the country’s vice-president.

Sen. Binay further explained that their being elected was not in their control anyway. She said if people didn’t like them, none of them would have been elected in the first place.

  1. A family of doctors has spent many years of having had so much pain, fatigue, frustrations, fear, uncertainties,as well as dedication and a lot of prayers, trust and faith in God to become what they are.
It takes only ONE single day, election day for any Tom Dick or Binay to become an elected public servant.

  2. Si fiona binay nga naman if you’re truely a sincere servant for the filipinos you should have first sharpened your intellect and filled your mind with true knowledge not selfish interests. Now you really exposed your self interest of just tryin to protect ur shrek corrupt father. Politics is purely a public welfare matter and corruption encompasses in it. Where in being a doctor is a profession and the earnings we gain are purely based on what the regulatory board has approved. All our earnings comes from our professional fees not from sort of corruptions from the country’s treasury.

  4. My god what a defense you should think first before saying those words doctor shed a lot of hard work, intelligence n tears unlike you politicians popularity is all ypu need to be in that position… shame on you 1 waste vote

  5. What a disgrace! I’m in med school, my family, including my cousins and uncle are all doctors. We work harder than people think to get that license. Example, right now, I’m actually sacrificing a lot of sleep for knowledge so I can cure people. It does not matter even if my family is known or rich, they can’t help me in my exams! The next time you see a family of doctors, don’t think dynasty, think “INTELLIGENT AND HARD WORKING” because on this thing, we are on our own and names or bloodline can’t get you a license and cure a patient.

  8. Have 2 drs .My family. No political knows my kids.Th do whats best re their professsion. You know Doctors under go 10 years studies from PreMed till they became consultant. Not a thing politics envolved.

Hooray…

  10. slow clap for the people who voted for her. you are the reason why she’s a senator in the first place. what good judgment you have, letting this dimwit (and the rest of her kin) into public governance. hope UP disowns the UP grads in the Binay family soon

  11. It’s never wise to compare politicians to doctors or to any other field of profession. First of sa politics you can be elected kasi gusto ka ng tao, it doesn’t matter if your educational background e related sa politics. Of course you will learn the craft as you go (that is if you arw really interested in gaining knowledge rather than gaining money for your pocket) and you will have people around you to dictate or help you out. Sa lawyers, doctors, nurse etc. During their board exam merun ba silang advisor na ready to tell them the answers para pumasa?, wala db. If one town wants this person to be a doctor, can they march up to PRC and say “we vote for him/her to be a doctor!” ? absolutely NOT.
Bottom line poor analogy….and pinaka important thing to ponder…is this the kind of person you want to vote again if in case she decided to run again? isip isip

  13. what DR. Carandang said is true. you only need to win an election to become a government official(elected official). But many politician also suffered thousand hours of sleep diprivation just to master their craft. Just a reminder to everyone there is a course called POLITICAL SCIENCE.

  14. Senator you talk like you’re not a daughter of a lawyer (your dad) and a doctor (your mom). Tell me, why did you not take those paths and chose politics instead? Is it because it’s easier to buy votes from the masses than spend years studying and taking exams? Maybe you should ask your parents what they went through to get their degrees.
It’s certainly not easy to become a doctor, much more raise kids to become doctors. My mother and her sister are doctors, my grandfather’s sister was a doctor, me and my brother and some of our cousins are doctors, but hey, we were not bestowed of the degrees just because we were children of doctors. We studied for a long time, worked hard, missed special family events, christmases and all holidays tending to our patients in the hospital instead of partying with family at home, we took numerous unending exams, slept only a few hours in a week, almost miss our meals especially when on duty due to workloads, sometimes we even share the little amount of allowance that we have to buy our patient’s meds. Now tell me how is it the same for politicians?

  15. Tang inang analogy yan, may magamit lng not considering the facts and facet of each job for this ulikba to compare his shitty political career or whole politics in general versus doctors or any in medicine industry who worked their ass off to save peoples live not spending someones money for this ulikbas’ lives(thats just one)

  16. “Sen. Binay further explained that their being elected was not in their control anyway. She said if people didn’t like them, none of them would have been elected in the first place.”

Sa susunod na election, subukan mong wag kayo mamili ng Boto ng makita mo pinasasabi mong “People like you and you are not in Control”

  17. I have read all the reactions of netizens and it all boils down to two reasons, stupidity and greed. Tsk tsk mag pa bleach Muna kaya Cia para luminaw utak
    at Isip nia.

  18. Baka mis understood lang ang analogy no Madam Binay.. im not a supporter ni Binay or ng kung anu mang pinaglalaban nya about family dynasty..but kung susriin naman natin ang ibig nyang sabihin sa mababa ko rin na pang intindi is kung anu yung kinahihiligan ng family. Kaya gnawa nyang example yung mga doctors kasi its a usual set up eh..mom and dad are doctors so there’s a big chance na magiging doctors din ang mga anak..same thing with being politicians..

  20. Well, I take pre-med course and it’s already killing my nerves. Sleepless nights, overlapping requirements, many chapters to read, many processes to understand – I do these just to earn a bachelor’s degree so I can proceed to medicine proper. Medicine proper is worse. It takes a lot of hard-work and perseverance to finish; more sleepless nights and proud pimples even fight! Now, I don’t suffer this much just to be metaphorically compared to politicians; or family of physicians to dynasty of politicians. Such a disgrace!

  21. Kahit kailan engot talaga yan!
