8 Two-Headed Animals you Need to See

Well, the saying goes, two heads are better than one and these 10 two-headed animals put that saying to the test, literally. This phenomenon occurs when monozygotic twins fail to separate completely, so it’s really a case of conjoined twins and not a mutation that caused two heads to grow. While the most common animals with two heads are two-headed snakes and tortoises many other species have had two heads as well.

Take a double look at these two-headed animals:

1. The bicephalic beast of Beelzebub was “part of a quartet of Texas cooters” hatched June 18, according to the zoo’s web site.

2. A farmer in northeastern Turkey recently discovered a bicephalic snake; that is, it has two heads. The two-week-old snake was transferred to an aquarium in southwestern Turkey in order to receive the specialized care it requires for survival. There hasn’t been any mention about what the caregivers are calling the snake or whether it will continue living at the aquarium long term.

3. Christopher Johnston was working as a longline fisherman in the Indian Ocean when a pregnant blue shark was hauled aboard somewhere between 200 and 900 miles off West Australia in September, 2008. When he cut open the creature, the freak fetus was discovered inside. He decided to share the photographs after scientists confirmed the discovery of a different two-headed bull shark foetus, off the coast of Mexico.

4. Found by April Britt in Massachusetts, this bird is a baby cardinal with two heads and three beaks. It’s unlikely that the two-headed bird would live long in the wild because animals with abnormalities usually fare poorly in the ruthless world.

7. Kirschbaum’s sister-in-law was the first to discover the rare cow on the farm’s grassy pasture. The two women then hauled its body back to their freezer via a four-wheeler to preserve the rare animal for possible donation to a museum.
