Marikina opens no-kill animal rescue shelter with free veterinary services

With the opening of the Marikina Animal Rescue and Shelter, the city now has a dedicated facility where rescued dogs and cats can receive care while being given the opportunity to find permanent homes through adoption.

The Marikina City Government has opened the Marikina Animal Rescue and Shelter, a new no-kill facility that will provide rescued dogs and cats with temporary housing and care while they await adoption.

Located along Gil Fernando Avenue, in front of the City Engineering Warehouse in Barangay Sto. Niño, the facility is a pet project of Marikina Mayor Maan Teodoro.

“Ang facility ay magsisilbing tahanan ng mga rescued na aso at pusa. Dito sila mabibigyan ng kalinga, pagkain, at kinakailangang atensiyon habang naghihintay ng kanilang adoption,” Teodoro said.

According to the mayor, the facility will operate as a no-kill shelter, with rescued animals receiving food, protection and necessary care rather than being euthanized simply because they have not been adopted.

Beyond serving as a temporary home for rescued animals, the shelter will also provide veterinary services for Marikina residents and their pets.

Among the services available are free daily anti-rabies vaccinations and veterinary check-ups, expanding the city’s efforts to promote responsible pet ownership and animal welfare.

The shelter officially opened on Sunday, October 4, coinciding with the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, traditionally recognized as the patron saint of animals.

Its inauguration formed part of Marikina’s Paws & Friends Festival and was held alongside PAWNTASTIC Marikina Car-Free Sunday.

The community event brought together pet owners and animal lovers for a pet walk, free anti-rabies vaccinations and a pet blessing.
