People like joking about selling a body part in order to afford something that they like. This inlcudes trips, food, or gadgets.
But a teenager in China actually stayed true to his word and sold his kidney to afford an iPhone 4 when it was first released.
According to Oriental Daily, the 17-year-old Xiao Wang wanted the latest iPhone 4, but unfortunately, they were poor. So he thought about selling one of his kidneys just to get one. After all, many say that a human only needs one kidney to survive. What could possibly go wrong, right?
He said that he would be more popular in his school if he got one, since not everyone could afford the phone.
He immediately researched and travelled from Anhui to a hospital in Chenzhou that performs the surgery. After talking to a middle man, he would receive an amount of $3,200 for the kidney.
The teenager was also assured that he will be able to get out of the hospital and go on with his life after a week.
Without his parents consent and just his middle man’s words, he got excited about getting his hands on the iPhone.
But it turned out that the “hospital” he went to is actually a fly-by-night facility, equipped with unsanitary operating environment.
Xiao still did the operation, but he got an infection. And as his parents had no idea what he was doing, he was scared to tell them.
When his parents learned about his condition, they took him to a proper hospital wherein they learned that the infection has spread to the other kidney, making it lose its function.
The infection also took Xiao’s ability to walk. And now that he’s 24-years-old, his family is left in a financial crisis just to support his medical needs. They have won a case against the said middle man, however, they have yet to find a kidney donor.
