Are the police exempted from public transportation fares?

  • Netizen shares about a police encounter she experienced in a jeepney.
  • This sparked a discussion about weather policemen are exempted when it comes to public transportation fares.

On October 9, Tuesday, a Twitter user named Erika Cruz posted about a policeman that they’ve encountered inside a jeepney.

There’s nothing unusual about the situation, however, they noticed that the said police never paid his fare. When Erika asked the driver why he didn’t call out the policeman, he said that he felt shy upon asking for it and it does happen often.

May nakasakay kaming pulis kanina sa jeep. Napansin naming di siya nag-abot ng bayad. Nung kinumpirma namin sa driver, sabi niya nahiya raw siyang maningil. Madalas daw nangyayari yun.

Netizens immediately reacted to the tweet. Some criticized the policeman’s actions and others’ entitled ways.

Yan ang pulis!!! Noong bata pa ako, may kapitbahay kaming pulis. Tuwing hapon pag umuuwi, naka taxi.

Aleona even shared an incident she witnessed wherein the police went down the jeepney in an unloading area, however, when a normal citizen tried to do the same, the driver said that he can only let the police do such.

Others defended the police and said that it’s out of respect and they are exempted in public transportation fares.

someone told me, it’s out of respect daw kaya di nila pinapabayad

Exempted sila sa public transpo

A netizen immediately stated that they are not exempted and they are only supposed to get 20 percent discount.

Hahaha nagsearch ako and they only have 20% discount on all goods and services. Sa VAT lang sila exempted. See pictures for reference.
