Girl with Harlequin Ichthyosis graduates from college despite skin condition

  • Girl with rare skin condition finishes college.
  • Despite having to deal with a lot of insults regarding her skin, she still continued to pursue her studies and reach for her dreams.

This one girl at the province of Abra didn’t fail to finish her studies even if she’s the subject of some people’s insults and harsh jokes.

Cindy Malangen is a 21-year-old Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering graduate. She was able to reach this point of her life despite her current situation.

She and her sister Wendy Malangen are suffering from a type of skin disease called Harlequin Ichthyosis wherein they endure living with scaly skin. It is the reason why they’re the subject of insult before. They were often called “human milkfish (taong bangus)” because of their condition.

But five years after their story got featured at ABS-CBN’s Lingkod Kapamilya and an episode of Maalaala Mo Kaya, they shared that they’ve gained more confidence and courage.

According to Cindy, “Naging matatag po ako, hindi na po ako mahiyain.”

Cindy also became an active volunteer in their community. She didn’t stop there because she was able to win the recent Sangguniang Kabataan elections.

She shared that she somewhat felt the need to give back to her sister Wendy as the latter chose to halt her studies in order to give way for Cindy’s education.

“Ang wish ko po makapagtrabaho po ako para mapag-aral ko po siya,”

Cindy is currently attending a review center in Manila for her upcoming licensure examination.
