INSPIRING: Harvard Graduate Shares How He Conquered Poverty through Perseverance and Hard Work

  • Shannon Satonori Lytle is a Harvard graduate who patiently made his way to the top.
  • He shared the story of how he survived studying while working on multiple jobs just to be able to pay for his fees.

Every student has a story.

Some came from a well-off family, the others are from the middle-class, and there are also a few who are a bit lacking in financial aspects.

There are times when ill-fated students manage to get a scholarship to pay for their fees, but there are also some who needed to work themselves off while meeting the requirements of their subjects at the same time.

Working students have a high population over the world, and all of them strive hard just to be able to help themselves and their parents to pay for their school bills.

One of the outstanding working students went viral after he shared his inspiring story on his Facebook account.

He recalled all the jobs he had gone through just to be able to reach college and finish his studies.

Read the inspiring story of Shannon Satonori Lytle below:

In high school, I flipped burgers at McDonald’s so I could afford the privilege of taking the SAT. I fed and cared for my three baby siblings until they went to sleep and stayed up until 4am to do my homework.

I walked home through a dangerous part of the city after extracurriculars because I couldn’t afford a car.

I stuck my laptop out of my window at night to steal my neighbor’s wifi and finish my schoolwork. I was scoffed at and told, “from this part of Ohio, only the children of doctors and lawyers get to go to Ivy League Schools.”

Even in his high school days, Lytle shared that life had been tough for him. However, he didn’t let any negativity get to him and strive even harder.

In college, I panicked when my laptop broke because I had worked 150 minimum wage hours to buy it.

I scrubbed toilets, shelved books, and sold clothing so I could chase my dreams and travel the world.

Throughout my life, I have maneuvered and begged for every kind of subsidy and coupon.

I’m the son of a warehouse worker and an immigrant; a first generation student.

Today, I graduated from Harvard.

Lytle posted a picture of himself, holding the much deserved diploma he got after years of working and studying at the same time.

He had gone through a lot of trials, but none of those had been successful in letting him down. For Lytle, his dreams were bigger than those challenges he had. And because of his hard work, he was rewarded the one thing he ever dreamed of: a college diploma – most especially, from Harvard.

Netizens who had read his story were inspired with how he managed to keep up with his work and studies for a long period of time. Moreover, everyone knew how hard it is to get in Harvard, let alone receive a diploma from a reputable university.

Lytle is the living proof that poverty is not, and shouldn’t be a hindrance for a student to achieve their dreams – no matter how big or small it may be. As long as a student holds the three important keys: hard work, determination and patience, he/she will surely receive a wonderful reward in the future.

What are your thoughts about Lytle’s story? Were you inspired as well?
