VIRAL: Kind surgeon comforts two-year-old patient before open heart surgery

A distraught two-year-old girl at a hospital in Zhejiang, China would not stop crying as she was being readied for open heart surgery in the operating room. Thankfully, her kindhearted surgeon stepped in. Deputy Director of Cardiac Surgery, Dr. Shi Zhuo, put her on his lap and played cartoons on his phone to distract her and calm her down.

It was easy for him to deal with distraught young patients as he has a six-year-old child of his own. After the post went viral, he would later reveal the reason for his kindhearted actions, “As parents, we understand that the children are scared and can appreciate the worry of the family.”

After a few minutes, the crying girl calmed down and the two peacefully watched cartoons on his phone. Although the child had been asking for his dad, she soon accepted the fact that her fate is in these strangers’ hands. Soon after, they were able to give her anesthesia and start the operation on her heart.

Before that happened, however, anesthesiologist Jin Ziying was able to capture the sweet moment on camera; he posted it on social media. It was not surprising that the post quickly went viral, with many people praising this kind doctor for taking the time to patiently let the girl calm down and feel better. Netizens hope all doctors would be as kind and compassionate as Dr. Shi.

The surgery turned out to be successful. The girl’s father expressed her gratefulness for this kindhearted doctor who helped his child in so many ways, not just to mend her heart but to also keep her calm and composed for the long and difficult surgery ahead of her. Kudos, Dr. Shi!
