4 ways to protect your eyes from harmful effects of digital devices

Failing eyesight can be the result of old age, but in today’s modern world of technology and gadgets, it’s almost no surprise either that even the eyesight of children are being damaged little by little.

In the 1990s, computers were the cause of eyestrain, but nowadays almost everybody has a smart phone, tablet or big screen TVs and monitors.

The company Gauss Eyewear studied the effects of prolonged exposure to digital devices. Gauss’s study revealed that “while we do a good job protecting our eyes from harmful outside UV/A and UV/B radiation with sunglasses, many of us fail to protect ourselves from the harmful blue light radiation, or high energy visible light, emitted from digital devices, which can cause eye strain and damage to the retinal pigment cells in the back of the eye.”

Prolonged exposure can also have the effect of making your eyes age faster.

“Blue light also affects our natural circadian rhythms, which are physical, mental, and behavioral changes that follow a roughly 24-hour cycle in response to light and darkness in our daily environment,” said Peter Gasca of the Entrepreneur website. “When our circadian rhythms are interrupted, our sleep patterns are altered and sleep quality is diminished, which can suppress the release of the sleep-regulating hormone melatonin.”

So just how do you protect your eyes from all these? Here are some tips. All it takes is a little effort and a little investment. After all, who wouldn’t want good eyesight?

1. Exercise your eyes.

Eyes should be moved every now and then. Look up, down, left, right. Looking in any direction will do. If you never move or flex your eyes, it will be difficult to focus on anything closer or farther than your screen.

Simply take a break from your screen for at least every 20 minutes and do eye exercises. Do some gentle massage as well to relieve those tired eyes.
