J. Crew axed executive who was caught partying after firing 175 employees

Laying off employees of a struggling company isn’t exactly an easy job. Apparently, this was not the case for J. Crew’s men’s merchandising vice-president Alejandro Rhett.

After firing 175 employees that day, the Georgetown-educated executive decided to celebrate at a local bar in New York City along with co-workers Vanessa de Jesus and Julie Stamos.

Believing it was the perfect night to get drunk and crazy, the 31-year-old executive and his buddies posted pictures of their outfits and smiles as they sipped champagne on Instagram.

As if showing how happy they were after the mass lay-off wasn’t enough, the trio even used the hashtags #hungergames and #maytheoddsbeeverinyourfavor with reference to the post-apocalyptic movie series The Hunger Games in their posts.

According to a company insider, Rhett’s postings were made in “poor judgement”.

“It’s just inappropriate that you’d be out drinking when people on your team had been laid off. J.Crew has serious issues right now, and no one in the office had a smile on their face that day,” the insider told The New York Post.

Rhett and de Jesus’ photos had been taken down but a company spokesman said that J. Crew “does not condone” such behaviour. Reports claim that the company had fired Rhett.

“We do not condone this behavior in any way. Individuals’ actions do not represent the culture of our company—this is not who we are. The tough decisions we made last week were not something we took lightly. We do our best to make decisions with care & compassion for all of our associates,” the brand said in a statement.

J. Crew’s first quarter earnings showed a 5% drop in the company’s sales and had an overall operating loss of almost $521 million.
