Kylie Jenner Challenge Goes Viral and Leaves Many Teens With Bruised Lips

Celebrities are often inspiration for the latest fashion or cosmetic trend, but when should fanatics draw the line between a matching haircut and an extreme body modification? Although reality star Kylie Jenner insists that she has not undergone any plastic surgery, fans have noticed a recent change in the size of Jenner’s lips.

The Kylie Jenner Challenge, also known by the hashtag #KylieJennerChallenge, is a viral trend where teenagers post videos or photos of themselves attempting to temporarily enlarge their lips by a suction technique called “the shot glass effect” in order to imitate the look of model and socialite Kylie Jenner.

Out of curiosity, many have tried to do it and see for themselves how does it looks on themselves.

Teens can be seen in video after video pushing their lips into shot glasses and other small objects, sucking hard for a short period of time to get the blood rushing to their face. When they pull their lips out, the effect is quite noticeable.

It’s also apparently painful. Teenagers are seen crying, screaming, and drooling.

The new trend in trying to DIY lip plumping is quite concerning, dermatologic surgeon Dendy Engelman recently shared to Seventeen. Not only can significant pain, swelling, and bruising result from these suction techniques, but there is potential risk for scarring and permanent disfigurement with repeated attempts.

“You can put yourself at risk for permanent disfigurement,” said Dr. Engelman. “I would certainly tell parents who see their children participate in this challenge that’s dangerous and really try to stop that behavior as quickly as you see it.”

Many people are doing this challenge even here in Philippines. One of the local celebrities who recently took on this challenge was RR Enriquez. RR was curious about the Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge so she decided to try and she said it was a big mistake to try it.

“My lips are swollen after I did the Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge and that was my stupid thing I did. Akala ko sa mata lang black eye, but my lips had it,” said RR Enriquez.

But some doctors said it is very dangerous and can disfigure your face. Dermatologist Dr. Engelman talked to The Insider about the dangers of the Kylie Jenner Challenge.

You can put yourself at risk for permanent disfigurement, said Dr. Engelman. I would certainly tell parents who see their children participate in this challenge that’s dangerous and really try to stop that behavior as quickly as you see it.

Not only is the actual result difficult to look at, but it also seems to be quite painful. Those that have been trying the shot-glass method have reported that bleeding and bruising around the mouth is common.

One teen said ‘it made my chin look like a hickey a week ago and I’ll say I’ve never felt so dumb’, another one saying ‘I Screwed Up’ and another revealing that she looked ‘Gross’.

Because of the alarming photos that went viral, Kylie took a Twitter to react.

I’m not here to try & encourage people/young girls to look like me or to think this is the way they should look, Kylie said.

The trend is alarming. Long-time board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Daniel Greenwald, based in Tampa, said this can be extremely dangerous.

They can be permanently scarred from this, ending up with blood clots in their lips for the rest of their lives, Dr. Greenwald said. People want to look beautiful. A lot of my patients ask for fuller lips, but I always tell them, ‘Moderation.’ It needs to look natural, like you’ve had nothing done, Dr. Greenwald added.

But despite the warnings and the clear failures, the Kylie Jenner lip challenge continues to take off on social media. The hashtag #kyliejennerchallenge was among the biggest trends on Twitter, and pictures of painful, swollen lips continue to roll in.
