Wedding Ring Found in the Ocean; Scuba Diver Tries to Find the Owner

A scuba diver from Gloucester, Massachusetts is making efforts to find the owner of a lost ring he found while wandering in the waters of Baraccuda point in Playa del Carmen in Mexico.

Believing in the magic of social media, Daniel Roark launched a Facebook campaign in the hopes that the owner will see his message. In his account, he posted a picture of the wedding band with the caption:

“Ok, so while scuba diving around Playa Reef, Playa Del Carmen last week, I happened to find this ring… I’m quite certain it is a wedding band, because engraved inside is “JESSICA 16 02 13 TYYJCEM”. Unfortunately there is no way for me to know whether it was lost, or intentionally thrown into the ocean… Assuming it was not the latter, I’d like to find the owner so I can send it to them. If you know a couple who was married on February 16th, 2013, who lost a wedding band (likely while diving) near Playa Del Carmen Mexico, please have them contact me at thelostweddingband@yahoo.com. If not, please take a second to share this. Let’s make some social media magic happen! -Daniel #thelostweddingband

His post has quickly gone viral with currently over 100,000 shares. It has also been shared in various social networks and has been featured in The Mirror UK.

As of press time, the owner of the wedding band has not been found but Daniel has not lost his hopes of finding the person.

Losing a Wedding Ring

In almost all cultures, wedding rings symbolise the commitment and love of couples to each other.

In modern society, losing a wedding ring may bring feelings of “sadness, guilt and of the irretrievability of the object,” according to author Diana Kirschner.

Kirschner suggests to do a unique ritual between the couple who lost their rings: recommitting and re-exchanging wedding vows to each other.

She added: “That way you imbue the new ring with the same meaning of the original.”
