Officials of Barangay Bagumbayan in Taguig were surprised to discover almost P74,000 cash inside a homeless woman’s bag.
According to the report by GMA News journalist Ivan Marina, Carmelita Bernasor claimed that the money kept inside her bag were her savings from her 30 years of selling.
Barangay officials first found Bernasor unkempt, sitting and seemingly dumfounded on Thursday, October 23.
As for the Bernasor’s personal details, she was only able to disclose that she is from from Malibay, Pasay. Her barangay ID also revealed that she is 54 years old.
Bernasor has been staying at the Barangay hall for several days when a health worker asked her to take a bath on Monday, October 28. Remedios Tenorio, the health worker who assisted her, found the cash inside the woman’s bag.
“Nung makita kong hindi po siya nakabuhol, yung punda pala yun ng unan. Pag ganyan ko, sabi ko ‘Ay ang dami mo palang pera, ’” Tenorio narrated.
When the officials counted Bernasor’s money, they were surprised to learn that it amounted to P73,990.
Gie Concepcion, a Barangay Kagawad said: “Halo halo, may P20, may P50, may P100, may P1000, may P500. Dikit dikit na siya. Naka-rubber band siya na nakatiklop na ganun. Para bang sa jueteng.”
Bernasor claimed that she has been saving money from her decades of selling balut, ice candy, soft drinks, bread, and other snacks since 1978.
Furthermore, Concepcion said the woman will remain under the custody of DSWD. Meanwhile, Bernasor’s money will be stored for safekeeping in Barangay Bagumbayan’s Treasurer’s office.
Ok… I don’t understand why she has to be in custody. It’s her money, give it back to her. Typical Filipinos.

I don’t know why they took the money from that poor lady. I don’t think there’s good enough reason for the barangay to keep her money because she didnt get accused or alleged with any crime of some sort none of us has a right to ask her where and how she get that money from. So pls. Return her money. And stop taking advantage of people.

Why would the health worker rummage through her stuff to discover the bundles of cash? If its her life savings its still her private property. Im sure the money is now being spent by those government thieves. You cant trust any one in the philippines.

Just check if the cash at hand mostly are our currency old notes or not. From there we’ll have an idea of the money’s origin…if it’s really hers or not.

Ay sana hinayaan nlang sa ali ang pera o kya diniposit nlang sa bank under her name kasi alam nman natin pag nsa gov na money maraming sitsiburetsi na baka manapolis pa yan. if the money is really hers, don’t keep it, give that back to her.. if the money is not hers, check the bill if it corresponds on the year that she’s telling.. then we can suggest what to do with those money.. but i suggest give that money back to her in a way that nobody can harm her. example, deposit that money in the bank with her name and get a portion for her to rent at least a room to live or a house where she can put up a business even a small sari-sari store.
