A separated couple’s disagreement over financial support for their two children has sparked online discussion following an episode of Raffy Tulfo in Action titled “₱20K NA SUSTENTO NI MR, KULANG DAW?!”

The couple, who are reportedly no longer living together but remain legally married, appeared on the program to discuss whether the father’s existing financial contribution adequately covers their children’s needs.
According to the discussion, the father provides approximately ₱20,000 to ₱25,000 in monthly support, reportedly shouldering certain school-related expenses and groceries separately.
However, the mother, identified as Maria, maintained that the amount remains insufficient and sought an increase to approximately ₱30,000 per month.
Maria explained that their eldest child attends a private school, while their youngest has asthma and requires regular medical checkups, adding to the family’s recurring expenses.
She also argued that the parent earning a higher income should shoulder a proportionately larger share of the children’s financial needs.
The disagreement subsequently raised questions about how separated parents should determine an appropriate amount of child support, particularly when educational expenses, medical requirements and differences in parental income are involved.
Under Article 201 of the Philippine Family Code, the amount of support must be proportionate to both the financial resources of the person obliged to provide it and the needs of the recipient. Support may also be increased or reduced when these circumstances change.
Both parents remain responsible for supporting their children, with their respective contributions determined according to their means.
The viral episode has brought renewed attention to the importance of assessing actual household expenses and each parent’s financial capacity when determining child support, rather than relying on a fixed monthly amount alone.
The figures and personal circumstances cited in this report are based on statements and discussions presented in the episode. Some details have not been independently verified.
