Pio Balbuena, Sen. Bam Aquino turn ₱410K ‘Tambay Cap’ auction into 21 laptops for Manila students

From a ₱410,000 cap auction to 21 laptops and hundreds of additional school-related gifts, the initiative shows how a creative fundraising idea can translate into tangible support for Filipino students.

A limited-edition cap has become an unexpected instrument for supporting education after rapper and entrepreneur Pio Balbuena teamed up with Senator Bam Aquino to provide 21 laptops to students of P. Burgos Elementary School in Manila.

The initiative was made possible through the auction of a one-of-one (1-of-1) Tambay Cap, which attracted a winning bid of ₱410,000 from Miguel “Migs” Valerio of MV Shoes and Apparel.

With additional support from computer retailer EasyPC, the fundraising effort generated a combined contribution valued at ₱610,000, benefiting students and teachers at the public school.

What makes the initiative particularly noteworthy is the story behind the winning bidder.

According to Valerio, he initially intended to spend only ₱50,000 on the exclusive Tambay Cap. However, after discovering that the proceeds would be used to purchase laptops for students, he decided to increase his offer substantially.

His final bid reached ₱410,000, more than eight times his original budget.

Senator Bam, who chairs the Senate Committee on Basic Education, personally expressed his appreciation for Valerio’s contribution.

“Ang daming matutulungan nitong nabili mo. Of course, napakaganda nung Tambay Cap but yung pinambili mo will help so many kids. So maraming, maraming salamat,” Aquino said.

The senator emphasized that beyond acquiring a collectible item, Valerio’s contribution would provide educational tools to children who could benefit from improved access to technology.

EasyPC adds 10 laptops, bringing total donation to 21

Following the auction, Pio and Migs visited EasyPC to purchase 11 laptops for P. Burgos Elementary School.

The donation was coordinated with the office of Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso.

EasyPC subsequently pledged an additional 10 laptops to support the project, bringing the total number of donated units to 21.

The retailer’s contribution raised the combined value of the auction-funded purchase and additional laptop donation to a reported ₱610,000.

For the organizers, the collaboration demonstrated how a single fundraising initiative could generate additional support from private businesses.

The project extended beyond providing laptops.

Pio shared that part of the auction proceeds was also used to purchase 220 Pabaon Packs for Grade 6 students at P. Burgos Elementary School.

He additionally distributed 35 Tambay Caps to Grade 6 pupils, while MV Shoes and Apparel donated 30 bags for teachers.

These contributions expanded the initiative’s reach, providing practical items to both students and educators.

This is not the first time Pio and Senator Bam have worked together on a Tambay Cap auction for education.

In 2025, the pair raised ₱155,000 through a similar auction, using the proceeds to purchase 10 laptops for students of Marikina High School.

EasyPC also supported that initiative by donating another 10 laptops, bringing the total to 20 units.

The laptops were distributed to students in Marikina City in an initiative involving Mayor Maan Teodoro.

With this year’s 21 laptops, the two annual projects have now provided a combined 41 laptops to public school beneficiaries.

The second-year collaboration also reflects the growing potential of partnerships between entertainers, entrepreneurs, private companies, and public officials in supporting educational needs.

Beyond his music career, Pio has established himself as an entrepreneur through his internationally recognized Tambay Caps.

Through Tambay Traders Inc., he also promotes livelihood opportunities for unemployed individuals.

His collaboration with Senator Bam is part of his effort to support quality education by helping provide students with the technology they need for learning.

By turning an exclusive fashion collectible into an educational fundraiser, Pio and his partners have demonstrated how merchandise can serve a purpose beyond personal style.
