Cinema One makes history! Iyah Mina becomes first transgender woman to win Best Actress in Philippine Cinema

• Mamu (And a Mother Too)’s Iyah Mina won the Best Actress Award at the recently concluded Cinema One Originals.
• She is the first ever transgender woman to win the award in Philippine Cinema.

Iyah Mina won the Best Actress Award for the movie Mamu (And a Mother Too), which was her big screen debut.

Mamu (And a Mother Too) is one of the movies that were included at the recently concluded Cinema One Originals lineup. The story circles around the life of a transgender sex worker who dreams to get breast implants until her orphaned niece unexpectedly arrived.

She did not only get the Best Actress Award, but the movie took home the Audience Choice Award as well.

Iyah Mina is the first ever transgender woman to win the Best Actress Award in the history of Philippine cinema.

Since she was shocked during her big moment, she took it to Instagram to express her gratitude for the win.

Hindi ko alam kung paano ako magsisimula.

Nung unang inofer sa akin ito nagdalwang isip pa ako baka hindi totoo.Hanggat sinabing ikaw nga po tlga Canpirm. Nung ginagawa ko na eto madami akong isinakripisyo Ang trabaho ko mga raket na kailangan ko kc dun lng nmn ako kumikita pati sa regular gig ko pero d ako nagsisi kc gusto kong maexperience ito. Hindi ko talagang Pangarap ang mag ka pelikula laging dasal ko lang sa Gabi regular guestings lang sa mga Game shows para alng may appearance ng makaraket ulit. Pero binigay sa akin ang Big Screen Thank You Lord.. Ng papalapit ng papalapit ang Awards night Wala sa isispan ko ang Pagiging Actress kahit sa panaginip. Ibinigay ko lang kung anung kaya kong gawin sa Pelikula lalo na sa Tulong na aming Director Rod Singh Mahal na mahal kita pati kay Direk Easy Ferrer na napakahusay din salamat sa tiyaga.  

She also wrote that she dedicates the win to the trans community and their continuous fight for equality.
