Experts say that oral sex can cause cancer

  • Studies say that oral sex may be one of the causes of throat cancer.
  • It is found out that oral sex can cause the spread of human papillomavirus which can cause pre-cancerous changes in cells.

Some couples may consider oral sex as one of the reasons of an active sex life, but one expert has some reminders to say.

According to one study in the United States, oral sex may actually cause cancer.

In Dr. Lulu Marquez‘s DZMM program called “Private Nights”, she talked about how oral sex is linked to throat cancer.  Even if it doesn’t directly cause cancer, it can spread the human papillomavirus or HPV, which can cause pre-cancerous changes in cells that may lead to throat cancer later on.

“Oral sex is linked to throat cancer,

You’ve heard about HPV, human papillomavirus–that will be the cause of the throat cancer. Masarap ‘yan, pero ingat.”

The study carried out in 2009-10 concluded that 1 in 10 American men and less than 4 in 100 American women had HPV infection in the mouth.

Also according to the said research, the chances of throat cancer can increase when you engage to it with numerous partners or if you often take part in casual sex with people you have no relationship with.

“It could show a greater risk for oropharyngeal cancer in people that had oral sex with at least six different partners,

Both men and women can have HPV infection in the throat, it does not discriminate by gender.”

However, the HPV infection can be cured and prevented from being throat cancer if the person is diagnosed early. To avoid throat cancer, Marquez suggested that people should stay away from casual sex and if possible, partake in a vaccination against HPV.

It is found that people who had at least six oral sex partners during their lifetime were 3.4 times more likely to have throat cancer. Those with 26 or more vaginal sex partners had 3.1 times the risk of developing throat cancer.

She also reminded married couples that oral sex should not be done forcefully and even of it can’t make you pregnant, it is still not considered as safe sex because it can still cause STD.

“Oral sex enhances some adult relationship… but it can also cause problems kapag pinilit mo ang partner mo.

Two percent of [American] teenagers who said they only had oral sex, they caught STD,”

The doctor also shared that there are two terms for oral sex: the Cunnilingus and Fellatio.

“Cunnilingus is when the man is doing oral sex sa woman… if the woman makes oral sex sa man, it’s called fellatio.”
