Short, white men more likely to lose hair

Bad news for men with a relatively shorter body height. According to a new research published in Nature Communications, they are more likely to go bald.

Based on the findings of the study carried out by researchers at University of Bonn, men with reduced body size and have early onset of puberty have higher risk of suffering from male pattern baldness.

“Our data indicates that some of the genes involved in baldness are associated, on average, with shorter stature,” Professor Stefanie Heilmann-Heimbach, lead author of the study, said.

The research team identified 63 genetic variations linked to premature hair loss and surprisingly discovered its association with height. However, researchers didn’t quantify the relative risk of baldness associated with varying statures.

Previous studies have shown that bald men have higher probability of suffering from prostate cancer and heart disease.

Asians usually start balding in their 40’s. Compared to Europeans, baldness among Asians’ overall frequency is much lower, affecting 50 to 60% of men.
