Trash and traffic mar LP Proclamation Rally in Caloocan

Last March 30, the Liberal Party held a Proclamation Rally in Caloocan City. Traffic in the Monumento area was left at a standstill hours before, during, and after the rally; while pictures of mounds of trash supporters left behind were circulated both on mainstream news organizations and on social media.

A portion of the EDSA-Monumento road was closed off to vehicles for the rally and, as reported by DZMM, a lot of motorists were left disgruntled. “Naiinis umano ang mga motorista dahil walang maagang abiso ukol sa pagsasara at walang palatandaan kung saan ang rerouting o mga alternatibong ruta.” (A lot of motorists felt angry as there weren’t any early advisories issued regarding the road closure, nor were there any clear signs put up to indicate re-routing or alternative routes to take.)

Meanwhile, an ABS-CBN News report stated that traffic remained at a standstill several hours even after the rally was convened because “scaffolding used for the make-shift stage blocked the southbound lane of the major thoroughfare. Traffic only eased back to normal at around midnight.”

The same news report also took note of the piles of trash and yellow confetti left behind by supporters who attended the rally. Facebook User Mario Diaz reposted ABS-CBN’s pictures of the mess with the caption: “Ito ang iniwan ng “Daang Matuwid” ni Mar Roxas pagkatapos ng LP proclamation rally sa Monumento Caloocan!” (This is what was left by Mar Roxas’ Daang Matuwid after the LP Proclamation Rally in Monumento, Caloocan.)

This mess happened despite the Comelec’s appeal to candidates to help clean up and properly dispose of garbage after election-related activities, in complying with Republic Act No. 9003, or the Ecological Waste Management Act of 2000.
