Your fart has secret health benefits

Fart, the stinky smelly (and sometimes, loud) gas produced by your body, can apparently combat a variety of diseases, according to researchers at the University of Exeter.

Their 2015 study showed that hydrogen sulfide, the compound found in the smell of rotten eggs and human flatulence, may potentially be useful in reducing mitochondrial damage to prevent a wide range of diseases.

Apparently, these findings could have future implications in mitigating an individual’s risk for cancer, stroke, heart disease, arthritis, and dementia by preserving the mitochondria.

The researchers revealed that the body generates enzymes to draw “minute quantities of hydrogen sulfide”  when the body’s cells are stressed by a disease. This natural body process protects the mitochondria which prevents certain diseases.

“We have exploited this natural process by making a compound, called AP39, which slowly delivers very small amounts of this gas specifically to the mitochondria,” Professor Matt Whiteman said in a statement.

Their findings showed that when the mitochondria is treated with AP39, cells are protected and stay alive.

Although no conclusions can be made as of the moment, the compound has been dubbed as “healthcare hero with significant implications for future therapies for a variety of diseases” by Dr. Mark Wood.
