Sleeping in a side position may reduce your risk for Alzheimer’s disease

A new study conducted by researchers from Stony Brook University suggests that your sleeping position may help change the risk of developing “dirty brain” diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other neurological diseases.

According to scientists, sleeping on your side will enable your brain to “detox” better as sleeping on your side allows your brain to get rid of the chemical clutter. Thus, sleeping in a lateral position may reduce your chances of developing Alzheimer’s and other diseases.

Previously, it was established that the brain removes toxins while we are sleeping. If these toxins, which are produced during are waking hours, accumulate, Alzheimer’s and other neurological diseases may develop.

Dr. Nedergaard explained that the lateral sleep position is common among humans and most animals.

“It appears that we have adapted the lateral sleep position to most efficiently clear our brain of the metabolic waste products that built up while we are awake,” Dr. Nedergaard said.

Moreover, study co-author Dr Helene Benveniste explained that sleep disturbances are linked to several types of dementia and may increase memory loss in Alzheimer’s disease.
