The term “engkanto” is  derived from the Spanish verb “encantar” meaning “bewitched,” “spellbound,” or “enchanted.” They are environmental spirits that have the ability to appear in human form. While they are believed to be spirits which can be guardians at times, engkanto are most commonly known for being malicious creatures.

It is believed that they victimize people and lead them to depression or madness and can even make them disappear. They can also cause epidemics and diseases especially to those they dislike or those who offend them. It is believed that amulets known as “anting-anting” are the best defenses against engkantos.
