Facebook debunks latest hoax

The message that says Facebook is about to make your private information public is absolutely fake.

To dispel rumors that have been circulating on the social network, Facebook decided to post a status update on Tuesday, September 29.

Using its official account, Facebook stated that it has always been and will continue to be a free service. Any posts about protecting your Facebook data is “just a hoax,” it warned users.

One of the versions making rounds online says:

“Now it’s official! It has been published in the media. Facebook has just released the entry price: $5.99 to keep the subscription of your status to be set to ‘private.’ If you paste this message on your page, it will be offered free (paste not share) if not tomorrow, all your posts can become public. Even the messages that have been deleted or the photos not allowed. After all, it does not cost anything for a simple copy and paste.”

According to the social media site’s terms of service, users own all of the information and content they share on Facebook. Through their application and privacy settings, users can control how their data is shared.
