REVIEW: Torque Ego One, a great budget phone for average or first-time Android users

Looking for an affordable smartphone as a gift for your loved ones or for yourself? Torque has just released a new smartphone to cater to your budget needs: the Torque Ego One. And it might be “the one” you are looking for.

We used the phone for about a week and here are some nifty features we’ve discovered about the Torque Ego One:

  • A GOOD BUILD

TORQUE EGO ONE BUILD

The Torque Ego One we got comes in black. (I heard you can get one with white-accented corners and a white rear housing.) It comes in an all plastic build that might not feel premium in the hands, but definite feels solid when held. Since the back is made of glossy plastic, fingerprints can be visible on the device so we advise you to carry a small cloth or handkerchief to wipe them away easily.

  • A BRIGHT DISPLAY

The Torque Ego One has a 3.5” TFT screen which is very responsive. The colors appear nicely—not too saturated and not too dull. The contrast is also good, especially when reading text messages. You can also adjust the brightness of the phone to your liking, but it doesn’t have an automatic adjustment so you have to do it manually.

  • GOOD FOR ONE HAND OPERATION

Since the Torque Ego One is a small smartphone, you can use it easily with just one hand. Also, since it’s made of plastic material, this phone feels light when held.

  • PERFORMANCE IS AVERAGE

TORQUE EGO ONE KITKAT

The Torque Ego One runs on Android 4.4.2 Kitkat, a 1GHz single processor with a RAM of 256 MB and a phone storage capacity of 512 MB. Although the ram is quite small, you will have no trouble operating the device. You can navigate through your social media accounts with ease.

We don’t recommend installing too many applications on this phone. Even if you can increase the capacity of the phone storage by using a memory card, the 256 MB RAM can not handle too many applications simultaneously. You can also play lightweight games in the device, but some games may not be available for Kitkat anymore.

  • A DECENT CAMERA

TORQUE EGO ONE CAMERA

The Torque Ego One has two 2MP cameras in the front and in the back, with an additional led flash at the back. The picture quality is just average for a 2MP camera. If you are using the photos for your social media accounts, then it will be just fine. Just don’t expect a great picture quality, especially in very bright situations.  Sadly, it has no auto focus. But once you get used to the camera, the fixed focus will not be such a hindrance at all.

TORQUE EGO ONE RESOLUTION

Here are some pictures taken using the Torque Ego One back camera with picture quality adjusted to maximum resolution and other settings set to default. The sample shots are not edited.

The picture looks smudged and there is a loss in detail. The camera also tends to overexpose the highlights leaving it just too bright.
In good lighting, the camera does well in focusing the subject. There is a bit loss in the detail but it is forgivable.

Low light also seems to be nice, but there is a lot of noise in the photo that is pretty common for low light shots.

By using the built-in flash, it will give light to the subject, making it more appealing. You can also notice a slight blue tint that caused by the flash.

  • BATTERY LIFE IS GREAT

TORQUE EGO ONE BATTERY

Since the device runs on Kitkat and has a small RAM, the phone doesn’t use much power. The battery has a capacity of 1000 mAh. It might be too small for an average phone, but with the Torque Ego One, it is very reliable. The device often lasts for about six to eight hours of average usage. But in standby mode, the phone lasts for about two or three days. That’s pretty neat if you need a backup phone in case of an emergency.

The Torque Ego One can also handle dual sim (only 2G); has Bluetooth, WiFi, and FM radio; and is packaged with a Torque Update application. Priced at only ₱1,199, it is definitely a good budget phone for the average users. Getting it as your first smartphone will absolutely give you a good android experience.
