When ‘Social Experiments’ and ‘Marketing Strategies’ Go Wrong | The Jackie Rice Story

When the video of Jackie Rice scolding an old fan became viral, GMA Network later announced that the clip was actually part of a ‘social experiment’ the network is doing for a Wish Ko Lang segment. So, was it really a social experiment or is the network trying to do some damage control after thousands of netizens bashed the actress regarding her behavior?

If it really was a ‘social experiment’, what went wrong?

The internet is full of videos on various social experiments but as far as I know, these videos are presented in the correct manner: there is a short intro about what the performers will do, then they show the actual experiment, and the video would either end there or there would be some sort of teaser or additional information regarding the experiment.

GMA’s version of the ‘social experiment’ shows the raw video of the ‘experiment’, with no introductions whatsoever. Then, the clip was uploaded on social media, with no explanations but carrying a teaser title about how the young actress got mad at an old fan.

Whoever thought about this whole idea did not realize that it would backfire. Is this their marketing strategy for Jackie Rice, so the world will take notice of her again? Or are they simply trying to create a stir so people will watch the next episode of Wish Ko Lang?

Bad publicity may still be publicity but couldn’t they think of any other way to do it than try to put the actress in such a horrible light?

Had it been a really irritating young fan who kept on taking the selfies and eventually ruining her outfit, the outcome might have been a little different than this. The old woman was their ultimate mistake. Anyone who watched the video would surely get angry at the person shouting to her like that – whether she was an actress or just an unknown face. You just can’t berate at an old woman like that and get away.

Painting Jackie Rice in a Bad Light

It is sad how a nice young woman who tried so hard to build her career and gain success in the glitzy world of showbiz became entangled in this mess. I guess she was only instructed to do what she did in the video – actors and actresses do that, after all. The people behind the viral ‘campaign’ are the ones to blame in this fiasco – or was the video accidentally uploaded before the correct clip could be finished?

If you watch the video without any idea that it was supposed to be a social experiment, you would surely think that Jackie Rice was really scolding the old woman and the uploader was truly someone who genuinely thought what she was doing was wrong.

According to the network, they wanted to gauge what people would do in such a situation wherein a beautiful young lady is berating an old woman. Would they try to intervene so the young lady wouldn’t hurt the old woman further or would they simply whip out their mobile phones to record the event and upload it on social media?

The person who filmed the vid might have taken the bait (Jackie also screamed at him/her to stop videotaping the scene) or could have been part of the crew. Whoever it was does not matter a lot because in all this, it was the actress who was painted in a bad light. Tsk. Tsk. Tsk.

  1. I think, that is how GMA does it. They make their public affairs program “raw” – no scripts, no apriori info so as to elicit the most genuine response. I don’t know if you have been privy of the previous “good samaritan” episode with Aiza Seguerra and I can’t remember who was that, I think Oyo Boy Sotto who was almost beaten as he pretended to be a beggar. Did you remember as well the social experiment done by the Psychylogy students of UP Manila about “Maria Yanggaw” which made a stir in the Visayas in around 2011? Well, I guess social experiments should be made that way. As a researcher, that is part of the risks that you have to contend with, especially in doing social science research. Since you are dealing with human emotions, there are always dangers of being unjustly judged. At any rate, I still laud Jackie Rice for very highly effectively pulling off with the role. As the cliche, “ang mga effective na kontrabida, kapag nakita mo ng personal gusto mong ilampaso”. Now, whether we admit it or not, Jackie Rice is known even among the Non-GMA followers, and Wish ko lang is now something that people would want to watch. There is no better business than show business…. Heheeh!

  2. People are intelligent to know that this is somewhat a prank or a social experiment even before they reveal it. This is not how showbiz bad publicity is being done. They usually put it first as blind item. So, what went wrong? Nothing! You are just too way more analytical than us mr/ms writer. Your write up is the bad publicity.

    • sad to say people are not that intelligent. if you see their reaction in social media they let their emotions take over instead of analyzing the situation. The writer is writing based on that situation not just his/her emotion. and people saying this is a social experiment gone wrong are the people who were too carried away by their emotion and judged the situation right away without analyzing. they are just making excuses for the way they behaved.

  3. yes, I would like to agree with the one who said that the author is a bit over reacting in saying that the actress was painted in a bad light because of these particular scene. Matatalino na po ang mga viewers. My 11 year old grandson commented when he saw the clip : ” ay, hindi totoo yan. cgurado experiment lang yan katulad ng sa wish ko lang kasi magaling umarte ung matanda.” If an 11 year old would think that way, what more can an adult think about it? I knew it from the start that it was scripted… and I need not be a scholar or a cum laude (as I am) to see that.

  4. What went wrong?hmm..if you look at it in a general perspective.yes,it really looked like Jackie is nagging at the old woman but since it was a social experiment in a raw video not yet commercialized I’ll commend them for bringing out the real intention since people reacted awfully in social media what more in person?right?and if you’re not kapuso it was believable since you have no idea about kapuso actors. As for the blogger, your article is called the bad publicity.yea I get it!you’re just writing articles to gain readers but at least be modest in your caption.sorry,I’m not buying your intentional article for whatever purpose you have in mind.

  5. If this is part of a campaign or a marketing, I guess they did it right. The main purpose of Social Experiment is to determine how a subject will react to situations brought up by an accomplice. It’s either they want to know what will happen or they want to prove that this will happen. This situation isn’t new as it’s now commonly used in US or even in UK. This has also branched out to what we called as ‘Pranks’. Currently, social experiment has been used by Apple, LG, and other huge Movie productions to promote their products.

  6. I should probably write an article about this article entitled – ” When an amateur author writes an opinion without further investigation, Boom! Nosebleed comments for you overflows” P.S Exaggeration!

  7. This has always been a cliche. They use artists in there social media rather than a commoner. Reactions from the public is undeniably always there because Jackie Rice herself is a known person. If they wanted a legitimate social experiment, they have to use people which are not seen from TV and let’s try to find out what would be the reactions of those people who are at the surrounding of the setting. I would consider this as an epic fail market strategy.

  8. Er, I just base what I see on the video, and so have people from around the world. And the conclusion is that this Rice is not a nice person. If you see a picture of someone naked, would you think “hey, this might be a social experiment!”? No, you take the imagery as it is. The social experiment behind it if ever was already done. Which is why extra care should be taken in presenting a person in a bad light without making sure the proper context comes ahead first, this is someone’s reputation that should be protected and respected. If this was a marketing stunt, poor, poor girl. If not, you deserve the global irritation you’ve sparked.

  10. Only GMA 7 can do that social experiment. It means that jackie rice was an effective actress portrayed that role in a scene. Its just that too many people overreacted on the scripted scene wherein they don’t wait for the conclusion for that video…again, think before you click.

  11. Its a failure because the old lady they used in the experiment is a know aktres in the indie world. She was in “ekstra” with vilma santos. Then she starred in “lola” an entry in the recent cinemalaya. I dont care about jackie rice nor gma but I guess a real social experiment should have normal people in it not celebrity or in case of jackie “starlet”.
