Rodante Marcoleta again expresses frustration over media coverage

As the Senate transitions under new leadership, Marcoleta’s latest comments have once again drawn attention to the ongoing relationship between lawmakers and the media, particularly regarding issues of coverage, accountability, and public perception.

Senator Rodante Marcoleta once again voiced his frustration with members of the media, claiming that many of his statements and explanations are not being published.

Marcoleta’s latest remarks came during a Senate session on June 17, weeks after he sparked controversy by referring to some members of the Senate media as “bayaran” during a Senate Blue Ribbon Committee meeting on June 4.

The senator subsequently apologized for the remark on the same day, clarifying that he did not intend to insult or discredit the entire media community. He also admitted that the statement stemmed from his disappointment at the time.

However, during Wednesday’s session, Marcoleta suggested that his concerns about media coverage remain unresolved.

“Lahat naman ng sinasabi ko, hindi n’yo naman pina-publish,” the senator said.

According to Marcoleta, he has repeatedly answered questions from reporters and provided detailed explanations on various issues, only to find that his statements were not reflected in news reports.

“Sa totoo lang, ilang beses n’yo na akong tinanong at nagpaliwanag ako nang mabuti, pero kapag binasa mo lahat ng diyaryo, wala,” he added.

The senator previously drew criticism after making remarks about members of the Senate media during a Blue Ribbon Committee proceeding on June 4.

Following public reaction, Marcoleta issued an apology, saying he had no intention of attacking the media as a whole and acknowledging that his comments were made out of frustration.

The incident sparked discussions among journalists and media organizations regarding press freedom and the role of media in covering legislative proceedings.

Marcoleta’s appearance at the June 17 session also marked the return of several members of the so-called Cayetano bloc to the Senate floor.

He was seen alongside fellow senators Loren Legarda, Pia Cayetano, Bong Go, and Imee Marcos.

The group had not been seen attending Senate sessions since June 1, 2026, when Senator Jinggoy Estrada voluntarily surrendered to authorities.

The session also came amid significant developments in the Senate leadership.

Earlier that day, Sherwin Gatchalian officially took his oath as the new Senate President following a special Senate session conducted in accordance with the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr..
