Redeveloped Iloilo Markets earn praise from vendors and shoppers

The market redevelopment aligns with the local government’s “My Heart Beats in Iloilo City” campaign, which aims to showcase the city’s unique heritage and culture while fostering a strong emotional connection between residents and their city.

Vendors and shoppers have welcomed the transformation of the Iloilo Central Public Market and Iloilo Terminal Public Market, citing improved facilities, cleaner surroundings, and a more convenient shopping experience that have boosted customer traffic and increased vendor earnings.

According to market vendors, the redevelopment of the two public markets has significantly improved daily operations by providing better working conditions and more efficient spaces for conducting business.

“The market is more beautiful, and it can entice more customers and tourists,” one vendor said.

Another vendor noted that the upgraded facilities have attracted a broader range of customers, including those from middle- and upper-income groups, helping increase sales and expand their customer base.

“The benefit is really huge, even the sales. Many people are coming here, even middle class and upper class. That is why the market is much better now,” the vendor shared.

Shoppers have likewise praised the improvements, highlighting the cleaner environment, wider walkways, and more organized layout.

“All that I am looking for are here already. Everything is complete. You will not find it difficult to roam around and you will not stumble into dirty and flooded slippery areas,” one customer said.

The markets now feature larger selling areas, improved ventilation, upgraded sanitation facilities, and enhanced structural designs that provide a more comfortable environment for both vendors and consumers.

As major trading centers and wholesale distribution hubs, the Iloilo Central and Terminal Markets play a vital role in the city’s economy by facilitating the movement of goods between farmers, suppliers, vendors, and households across Iloilo and neighboring provinces.

According to the city government, the two markets remain an integral part of Iloilo’s economic ecosystem and continue to serve as important centers for commerce and community interaction.

The redevelopment project began under the administration of former Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas through a 25-year lease agreement with SM Prime Holdings. The company invested approximately ₱3 billion to modernize the facilities and transform them into clean, safe, and efficient commercial hubs.

The project has continued under the leadership of Mayor Raisa Treñas. Today, the redeveloped markets accommodate around 2,000 stalls, offering vendors improved business opportunities while providing shoppers with a more organized and enjoyable market experience.

The Iloilo Central Public Market operates from 4:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., while the Iloilo Terminal Public Market is open from 1:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

The market modernization initiative also supports the city government’s “My Heart Beats in Iloilo City” campaign, which aims to promote Iloilo’s rich heritage, culture, and identity while strengthening residents’ connection to their city.
